Google, Meta to Explain Algorithm under New EU Lagislation

The European Union (EU) has agreed on the Digital Services Act (DSA), which will oblige internet firms to bear greater responsibility for material on their platforms or risk fines of up to 6% of their annual turnover if they do not comply.

Google, Meta, and other platforms will be forced to explain their algorithms in the future.

The DSA establishes an extraordinary new threshold for online platforms’ accountability when it comes to illegal and harmful information.

The European Commission stated in a statement that it will give better protection for internet users and their fundamental rights, as well as define a uniform set of regulations for the internal market, allowing smaller platforms to expand.

“All online services in the EU will have their ground rules upgraded by the DSA. It will ensure that the internet environment stays a secure one, protecting freedom of expression and digital commercial potential. It puts the notion that what is prohibited offline should also be criminal online into practice “Ursula von der Leyen, the Commission’s President, stated.

Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President for a Europe Fit for the Digital Age, underlined that online platforms should now be clear about their content moderation choices, prevent hazardous disinformation from going viral, and avoid risky products being provided on marketplaces.

The Digital Markets Act (DMA), which was passed in March, is not the same as the DSA.

The DMA is concerned with leveling the playing field between businesses, whereas the DSA is concerned with how corporations to police content on their platforms.

“With this agreement, we ensure that platforms are held accountable for the risks that their services may pose to society and citizens,” Vestager said.

The DSA, according to the regulators, will put an end to huge web platforms acting as though they are “too big to care.”
