Google’s Bard Now Feels Quicker with New ‘Respond in Real Time’ Feature

Google AI Bard

Google is taking a significant step forward in enhancing user experience with their large language models (LLMs) by introducing a novel feature for Bard, its language model.

This new update, labeled “Respond in Real Time,” is designed to make interactions with Bard feel swifter and more dynamic. While the speed of response in large language models isn’t instantaneous due to the complex processes involved, this update aims to make the waiting period less noticeable and more engaging.

With the “Respond in Real Time” option activated, users will notice that Bard’s responses will start to appear in a line-by-line format as they are being generated. This means that instead of waiting for the complete response to be formulated and displayed, users will see the text emerging progressively. During this process, Bard’s iconic sparkle will rotate in different colors, signaling that it’s actively working on the prompt.

An interesting addition to this feature is the introduction of a “Skip response” button. This button, which appears in blue above the text field, allows users to interrupt Bard if they feel the response being generated isn’t useful or relevant to their query. This option provides users with greater control over the interaction, enabling them to stop the response mid-way and rephrase their query or try a different approach if needed. This feature seems to be set as the new default setting for Bard, offering users a more interactive experience.

For those who prefer the original behavior, there’s still an option available. The alternative setting allows users to receive answers only once they are fully complete. This method may provide responses quicker than the streaming-like real-time option, as it eliminates the gradual display of text.

Users can easily toggle between these two settings. By tapping the settings gear icon, they will find both “Respond in Real Time” and “Respond Once Complete” options, allowing them to choose their preferred interaction mode based on their needs and convenience.

Interestingly, this new real-time setting has been launched in recent days but has not made its appearance in Google’s Bard Updates changelog. This might indicate that Google is rolling out this feature quietly, perhaps to gauge user response and feedback before making a broader announcement.

Regardless, the addition of the “Respond in Real Time” feature marks an exciting development in the realm of large language models. It showcases Google’s commitment to improving user experience and pushing the boundaries of what these advanced AI systems can offer. With this update, interactions with Bard become more engaging and fluid, reducing the passive waiting period and offering users a glimpse into the real-time thought process of the AI.
