Euro 2024: Prize Money Breakdown for the Winning Team

euro 2024 winning team prize money

Euro 2024 is set to be an exhilarating month-long football tournament, running from June 14 to July 14. This event will feature 51 matches, starting from the group stages and culminating in the final showdown, where one team will be crowned the European champion. The final will be held at the iconic Olympiastadion in Berlin, a fitting venue for such a prestigious event. But beyond the glory of lifting the trophy, there’s a lot more at stake for the teams involved.

Record-Breaking Prize Money

Euro 2024 boasts a total prize pool of 331 million euros (over 355 million dollars), marking a significant increase from previous tournaments. For comparison, during the 1996 edition held in England, the total prize money was only 55 million euros. This increase reflects the growing popularity and commercial success of the tournament.

Financial Rewards at Every Stage

The prize money is distributed at various stages of the tournament, ensuring that teams are rewarded for their performances throughout the event:

  • Group Stage: Each victory in the group stage earns a team one million euros (over one million dollars), while a draw brings in 500,000 euros (more than 536,000 dollars). This encourages teams to perform well right from the start.
  • Round of 16: Advancing to the round of 16 comes with a prize of 1.5 million euros (more than 1.6 million dollars).
  • Quarterfinals: Teams that make it to the quarterfinals will receive 2.5 million euros (2.7 million dollars).
  • Semifinals: Reaching the semifinals earns a team 4 million euros (over 4.2 million dollars).
  • Finals: The champion team will win 8 million euros (8.6 million dollars), while the runner-up will take home 4 million euros.

Potential Earnings for the Champion

The total potential earnings for the team that wins Euro 2024 could reach up to 28.25 million euros (more than 30 million dollars). This substantial sum not only rewards the players and staff but also provides significant financial support for their national football federations.

Benefits for Club Teams

UEFA recognizes the contributions of club teams that loan their players to national squads. To compensate these clubs, UEFA will distribute 140 million euros (150 million dollars) among them. Major European leagues like the Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Serie A, Premier League, and La Liga will be reimbursed around 10,000 euros per day for each player called up. This compensation starts 10 days before the tournament begins. A club with a player in the final could earn up to 400,000 euros (more than 429,000 dollars).

The Prestigious Trophy

The winning team will lift a magnificent trophy that stands 60 centimeters tall and weighs eight kilograms. This new version of the trophy, introduced in 2008, is taller and heavier than the original, which did not have a pedestal. Made of sterling silver, the trophy is dedicated to Henri Delaunay, a French sports leader who proposed the idea of a European competition. The trophy was created by his son Pierre, who succeeded him as UEFA’s general secretary. Crafted by Asprey in London, the trophy is valued at approximately 30,000 euros (more than 32,000 dollars).

Euro 2024: A Major Financial Event

Euro 2024 is not only about football; it is also a significant financial event. The tournament is expected to generate 2.4 billion euros (more than 2.5 billion dollars), making it the richest in history. This is a considerable increase from the 1.8 billion euros generated in England three years ago and the 1.9 billion euros in France in 2016.

Sources of Revenue

UEFA will earn 1.44 billion euros from television rights alone. Additionally, sponsors will contribute 568 million euros, and ticket sales and hospitality are expected to bring in 400 million euros. The tournament is anticipated to attract over seven million fans to Germany, boosting the local economy and creating a festive atmosphere.

UEFA’s Net Revenue

The net revenue for UEFA, which is the difference between income and costs, is estimated to be around 1.2 billion euros. This figure is significantly higher than in previous tournaments. For instance, net revenue was 645 million euros in 2021, 847 million euros in 2016, and 593 million euros in 2012. This increase is partly due to the fact that in Euro 2024, only 13% of the revenue will be distributed as prize money, compared to 78% in other UEFA competitions like the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.

Players’ Rewards

The financial rewards extend to the players as well. While the exact prize agreements between federations and their players are often kept secret, we know that the Italian players who won the European Championship in 2021 each received 250,000 euros (268,000 dollars).

Euro 2024 promises to be an unforgettable month of football, with thrilling matches and significant financial rewards for both teams and clubs. The tournament’s increased prize money and lucrative rewards highlight its growing importance in the world of football. As fans eagerly await the kickoff, the anticipation is building for what promises to be a spectacular celebration of European football.
