For nearly a century, the iconic superhero Superman has been inspiring audiences worldwide with his unwavering morals, incredible strength, and steadfast commitment to truth, justice and the American way.
Now, a new actor is preparing to uphold that powerful legacy as David Corenswet steps into the famous red and blue suit for James Gunn’s upcoming 2025 film simply titled “Superman.”
Gunn, the newly appointed co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios, recently unveiled the first official look at Corenswet suited up as the latest live-action iteration of the beloved Man of Steel.
While the image depicts the actor’s Superman appearing disheveled and world-weary, Gunn has assured fans that his take will capture the character’s quintessential kindness, compassion, and humanity.
“He’s gotta be somebody who has the kindness and the compassion that Superman has and be somebody who you want to give a hug,” Gunn explained to Variety about his criteria for casting this crucial role at the center of DC’s new multimedia story universe.
A Prestigious Pedigree
Corenswet, a 30-year-old actor who has garnered praise for his supporting roles in Ryan Murphy’s “The Politician” and “Hollywood” series, now joins an esteemed group of performers who have previously brought the Kryptonian hero to life on screens both big and small:
– Kirk Alyn was the first to don the cape, starring in the 1948 Superman movie serial that kicked off the character’s live-action adventures.
– George Reeves solidified Superman as an iconic TV presence with his starring role in the 1950s series “Adventures of Superman.”
– For an entire generation, Christopher Reeve’s performances in the 1978 “Superman” film and its three sequels defined the character and set the standard.
– In the 1990s, Dean Cain brought new energy as the Man of Steel in the romantic comedy series “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” opposite Teri Hatcher’s Lois Lane.
– Tom Welling offered a grounded, coming-of-age take on Clark Kent’s journey in the long-running 2000s show “Smallville.”
– Brandon Routh paid homage to Christopher Reeve with his portrayal in the 2006 film “Superman Returns.”
– Most recently, Henry Cavill ushered in a grittier, more brooding Superman for Zack Snyder’s DC Extended Universe films like “Man of Steel” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”
An Optimistic Path Forward
While Corenswet’s Superman costume appears tarnished in the first look photo, perhaps hinting at some darkness ahead, the actor has vocalized his desire to capture a more upbeat, classic portrayal of the character’s inherent hopefulness.
“I would love to see the next one be very bright and optimistic,” Corenswet told Entertainment Weekly back in 2019 about his dream Superman project.
As Gunn and his co-CEO Peter Safran lay the foundations for DC’s new interconnected film, TV, video game, and animation universe, they seem intent on tapping into the inspirational essence that has made Superman so enduring and meaningful to generations of fans since his comic book debut in 1938.
With this new film set to soar into theaters on July 11, 2025, all eyes will be on Corenswet as he takes on the mantle of pop culture’s most iconic superhero. Can he capture the perfect blend of power and vulnerability?
Will he inspire hope and represent the best of humanity? Only time will tell if this latest actor can truly embody the fantastic traditions of the Superman legacy while charting an exciting new course for the Man of Tomorrow.
