Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev could leave the 2025 Australian Open with over $200,000 in fines and costs after a series of on-court outbursts and a shocking second-round loss to American qualifier Learner Tien. Medvedev’s actions, which included damaging tournament equipment and skipping post-match media duties, have put him under scrutiny from organizers and fans alike.

Second-Round Exit in a Grueling Battle

The 27-year-old Medvedev, ranked world No. 5, faced a surprising and disappointing exit in the second round at the hands of 19-year-old Learner Tien, ranked 116 places below him. The match unfolded on Margaret Court Arena and lasted an exhausting 4 hours and 49 minutes, eventually concluding in the early hours of Friday morning, just before 3 a.m.

Tien displayed remarkable composure and skill, outlasting Medvedev in five sets with a final score of 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (8-10), 1-6, 7-6 (10-7). The young American qualifier, who is relatively unknown in comparison to Medvedev, achieved one of the most significant upsets of the tournament so far.

Skipping Mandatory Media Commitments

After the grueling loss, Medvedev raised eyebrows by failing to attend his mandatory post-match press conference. Journalists waited until the early hours of the morning to hear from the Russian star but were informed at 3:32 a.m. that he was on his way. However, just six minutes later, they were told that Medvedev would not be coming.

Skipping media commitments violates tournament rules, and while organizers may show leniency due to the lateness of the match, such no-shows often result in fines. Notably, other players have faced penalties for similar actions in the past, making Medvedev’s decision particularly contentious.

A Series of On-Court Incidents

The second-round defeat was not Medvedev’s only moment of controversy during the tournament. In his first-round victory against Thai wildcard Kasidit Samrej, Medvedev’s frustration boiled over in the third set when he lost a crucial point. In a fit of anger, he smashed his racquet into the net, inadvertently destroying a camera attached to it.

This incident drew widespread criticism, with commentators and fans calling his behavior unsportsmanlike. Tournament officials issued a code violation for racquet abuse, and Medvedev is now likely facing a hefty fine for the damaged equipment, which could cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Additionally, during his match against Tien, Medvedev received a point penalty for taunting a line judge by pretending to hit a ball at him. This action, deemed unsportsmanlike conduct, added to the mounting violations against him.

Potential Fines and Financial Repercussions

Australian Open officials, led by tournament director Craig Tiley, will now determine the extent of Medvedev’s fines. Under tournament rules, players can face fines of up to $50,000 for racquet abuse and up to $100,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct. The cost of the damaged camera may also be added to Medvedev’s bill.

In total, Medvedev’s fines could exceed $200,000, a significant sum that coincidentally matches the prize money awarded for reaching the second round of the Australian Open. For context, fines for similar behavior in past tournaments have served as warnings to players about maintaining professionalism on and off the court.

Reactions from the Tennis Community

The tennis world has been divided in its response to Medvedev’s actions. Some, like commentator John Fitzgerald, have criticized his unsportsmanlike behavior, saying, “He’s been taunting him [the line judge] for quite a while, and I think the chair umpire finally decided to give him a point penalty.” Others, including American journalist Ben Rothenberg, expressed understanding about Medvedev skipping the late-night press conference, considering the match’s grueling length and unusual timing.

Despite the controversies, Medvedev remains a dominant force in tennis, with career earnings exceeding $45 million. However, such incidents have raised questions about his temperament and professionalism, especially in high-pressure moments.

What’s Next for Medvedev?

While this year’s Australian Open has been a tumultuous experience for Medvedev, he has a history of bouncing back from setbacks. Known for his resilience and tactical brilliance on the court, the Russian star will likely use these incidents as motivation to improve and rebuild his reputation in the coming tournaments.

As the season continues, Medvedev’s ability to learn from these challenges and refocus on his game will be crucial. Fans will be watching closely to see if he can channel his frustrations into success on the court, while the fines and penalties from the Australian Open serve as a reminder of the importance of maintaining composure under pressure.
