Legendary Actor Soumitra Chatterjee No More

Soumitra Chatterjee

Legendary actor Soumitra Chatterjee passed away at a private hospital in Kolkata around noon Sunday.

He breathed his last around 12:15pm (IST) at Belle Vue Clinic, the hospital sources confirmed the news, Anandabazar reports.

The veteran Indian actor had tested positive for Covid-19 on October 6. After that, he was admitted to the hospital. Later he recovered from the Coronavirus infection.

The 85-year-old actor was under observation and receiving treatment at the hospital since then. He was put on a ventilator on October 27. His kidneys were not functioning well though his heart and lungs were stable. His health condition deteriorated further on Friday and not responding since then. 

Soumitra, who was suffering from secondary pneumonia, had been undergoing treatment for 45 days at the hospital. The Bengali actor underwent tracheostomy and plasmapheresis. Also, he was a prostate cancer survivor.

He was cremated Sunday evening at Kolkata’s Keoratala Burning Ghat with a gun-salute. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, leftist politicians Biman Bose, and thousands of Chatterjee’s fans and admirers joined the funeral program.

He fell ill during shooting for an autobiographical documentary titled “Abhijan”. Another Bengali actor Parambrata Chattopadhyay is the director of the documentary. He last attended the shooting at Bharatlaxmi Studio on October 1. 

Soumitra Chatterjee or Chattopadhyay, the Dada Saheb Phalke award winner, was best known for his collaboration with Oscar-winner Satyajit Ray and the role of Feluda.

Apart from Feluda role, Soumitra was a part of several other works of Satyajit Ray. He is also famous for his role as Apu in the Bangla film Apu’r Sangshar or The World Of Apu. Some of his best films include Ashani Sanket, Ghare Baire, Aranyer Din Ratri, Charulata, Shakha Proshakha, Jhinder Bandi, Saat Pake Bandha. Also, he received the Padma Bhushan award in 2004.

Born in West Bengal’s Krishnanagar on January 19, 1935, Soumitra made his film debut in 1959 in Satyajit Ray’s, “Apur Sansar”. They worked together in 14 films.
 

Soumitra was also active in theatre, and a writer, playwright, and director. He studied in the Howrah Zilla School, City College, Kolkata, and at the University of Calcutta.

Shesher Kobita, Tiktiki, Nilkantho, Ghatak Biday, Rajkumar, and Phera, were among his famous theatre performances.
