Gene Hackman’s $80M Will: Why His Children Weren’t Named as Heirs

Gene Hackman will children inheritance

The release of Hollywood legend Gene Hackman’s will has sparked uncertainty over the fate of his estimated $80 million fortune. While the two-time Academy Award winner had named his wife, Betsy Arakawa, as the sole beneficiary, legal complications have now emerged following the couple’s tragic deaths in their New Mexico home.

Hackman’s Will and the Legal Dilemma

Hackman, known for his iconic roles in The French Connection and Unforgiven, drafted his will in 1995, last updating it in 2005. The document explicitly named his wife, Betsy Arakawa, as the sole inheritor of his estate. However, authorities have determined that Arakawa passed away seven days before Hackman, raising questions about who will now inherit his wealth.

What Happens to Hackman’s Fortune?

Legal experts suggest that since Arakawa died first, Hackman’s estate may now be subject to intestate succession laws. According to California attorney Tre Lovell, Hackman’s three children—Christopher, 65, Elizabeth, 62, and Leslie, 58—could potentially inherit the fortune despite not being named in the will.

“The estate will actually be probated in accordance with intestate succession laws, and the children would be lawfully next in line to inherit,” Lovell told the BBC. However, for the inheritance to be settled in their favor, Hackman’s children might need to prove that the will is invalid due to the order of their parents’ deaths.

The Tragic Passing of Hackman and Arakawa

Authorities reported that Arakawa passed away on February 11 after contracting a rare virus. Hackman, who suffered from severe heart disease and advanced Alzheimer’s, died seven days later of natural causes. Their bodies were discovered on February 26 in separate rooms of their $4 million Santa Fe home after a neighborhood security check.

Reports indicate that Arakawa was found in the bathroom with pills scattered nearby, while Hackman was in another room wearing sweatpants and slippers, with his cane and sunglasses beside him. Though the scene was initially considered “suspicious,” officials ruled out foul play.

Arakawa’s Will and Charitable Donations

Arakawa had her own estate plan, which left her assets to Hackman. However, her will included a provision stating that if both she and Hackman died within 90 days of each other, her estate would be placed in a trust and later donated to charity after covering medical expenses. This further complicates the legal battle over Hackman’s fortune, as it remains unclear how much of their combined assets will go to their children versus charitable causes.

Hackman’s Relationship with His Children

Hackman, who had three children with his late ex-wife, Faye Maltese, openly acknowledged the difficulties of balancing fatherhood with his acting career. In a 1989 interview with The New York Times, he admitted, “You become very selfish as an actor. Even though I had a family, I took jobs that would separate us for three or four months at a time. The temptations in that, the money and recognition, it was too much for the poor boy in me.”

His children largely stayed out of the public eye, though they occasionally appeared with him at red carpet events. In a 2000 interview with The Irish Independent, Hackman acknowledged the challenges his children faced growing up under the shadow of his fame. “It’s tough being the son or daughter of a celebrity,” he said. “I couldn’t always be home with them when they were growing up, and then, living in California, they’ve had my success always hanging over their heads.”

Despite this, Hackman’s daughters and granddaughter expressed deep love and admiration for him following his passing. “He was loved and admired by millions around the world for his brilliant acting career, but to us, he was always just Dad and Grandpa,” they said in a statement. “We will miss him sorely and are devastated by the loss.”

What Comes Next?

With Hackman’s will naming only his late wife as the beneficiary, the estate may now be settled through legal proceedings. If no other heirs were explicitly named, the court could rule in favor of his children under succession laws. However, with Arakawa’s estate containing a clause directing funds to charity, there may be further legal challenges ahead.

For now, Hackman’s legacy lives on through his legendary contributions to film and the memories cherished by those closest to him. The fate of his wealth, however, remains to be determined by legal processes in the coming months.
