Los Angeles, CA- John Lithgow is headed to Hogwarts. The acclaimed 79-year-old actor confirmed this week that he has said “yes” to portraying Professor Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s highly anticipated Harry Potter television series.
This casting places Lithgow in the formidable footsteps of predecessors Richard Harris and Michael Gambon, who brought the Hogwarts headmaster to life in the original film series.
Lithgow Confirms Iconic Role
Speaking with ScreenRant at the Sundance Film Festival, Lithgow recounted that the offer to play Dumbledore came as a surprise and that accepting the part was no trivial matter. “Well, it came as a total surprise to me… it was not an easy decision because it’s going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I’m afraid. But I’m very excited,” he said, explaining the weight of taking on a role that could span years.
Ultimately, the veteran star agreed to don Dumbledore’s robes, adding wryly, “I’ll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I’ve said yes”.

Storied Acting Career
With a career spanning five decades, Lithgow brings substantial gravitas to the role. He is a versatile performer known for both drama and comedy across stage and screen. Lithgow’s credits range from Oscar-nominated film work in the 1980s to acclaimed television roles like the Trinity Killer on Dexter and Winston Churchill on The Crown.
This rich background has earned him multiple Emmy and Tony awards, underscoring his ability to add new layers to the wise, twinkle-eyed Hogwarts headmaster.
Following in the Footsteps of Past Dumbledores
Lithgow’s portrayal will inevitably invite comparisons to the late Richard Harris and Michael Gambon, who each put their stamp on Dumbledore in Warner Bros.’ original films. Harris played the headmaster in the first two Harry Potter movies until his death in 2002, and Gambon took over for the remaining six films.
Both actors left an indelible mark on the franchise, setting a high bar for anyone following. Lithgow, an American, steps into this traditionally British role, but his lauded turn as Winston Churchill in The Crown shows he can credibly adopt a British persona. As Dumbledore, he will aim to honor the spirit of his predecessors while making the part distinctly his own.
HBO’s Harry Potter Series: What to Expect
The new series is still in pre-production, but details are starting to surface. HBO’s adaptation is planned as a faithful, seven-season retelling of J.K. Rowling’s saga, with each season covering one book—and filming is expected to begin later this year. Writer-producer Francesca Gardiner will serve as showrunner, and veteran director Mark Mylod (of Game of Thrones and Succession) is attached to helm multiple episodes. Series author J.K. Rowling is also on board as an executive producer to help maintain authenticity.
Casting for the show’s other characters remains underway. Warner Bros. held open auditions last year for the roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, signaling a search for fresh talent. Notably, prior to Lithgow’s involvement, Oscar-winner Mark Rylance had been rumored as a contender for Dumbledore. HBO, for its part, is keeping quiet on casting speculation; the network stated it “will only confirm details as we finalize deals” during the early production phase.
The series is reportedly aiming for a release in 2026 or 2027. With Lithgow’s star power anchoring the cast, HBO’s return to Hogwarts is poised to conjure new magic for a new generation of fans.
