Appointment of George van Egmond

On October 26, 1534, Emperor Charles V chose George van Egmond to be the Bishop of Utrecht. Utrecht was an important city in what is now the Netherlands.

Being a bishop was both a religious and political job at that time. The bishop helped run the city and the church. Charles V picked George van Egmond because he thought he would be loyal to him.

This appointment was important because it showed how much power Charles V had over both the church and government. It also helped keep Utrecht under the control of the Habsburg family, which ruled much of Europe at that time.

1850: Discovery of Northwest Passage

On October 26, 1850, Robert McClure found something sailors had been looking for for hundreds of years. He saw a way to sail between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Arctic. This was called the Northwest Passage.
