West Indies Secure Tense Victory Over Papua New Guinea in T20 World Cup Opener

west indies t20 world cup victory over papua new guinea

In a tense Group C match of the Men’s T20 World Cup, the West Indies were made to work hard for their five-wicket win over Papua New Guinea in Guyana.

Despite being the favorites, the co-hosts faced a stiff challenge from the underdogs, highlighting the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket.

Early Breakthroughs for West Indies

The West Indies started strongly, reducing Papua New Guinea to 7-2 within the first 2.1 overs.

Seam bowler Romario Shepherd struck early, dismissing Tony Ura for 2, while left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein took out Lega Siaka for just 1.

This early breakthrough put the West Indies in a commanding position, but Papua New Guinea showed resilience.

Sese Bau’s Half-Century Leads PNG Recovery

Sese Bau played a pivotal role in Papua New Guinea’s innings, scoring 50 off 43 balls.

His innings, which included six fours and a six, was the second half-century for his country in T20 World Cups, following skipper Assad Vala’s 56 against Oman in 2021.

Bau’s efforts helped PNG post a competitive total of 136-8.

West Indies’ Mid-Innings Collapse

Chasing 137, the West Indies looked in control at 61-1 after eight overs. However, a sudden collapse saw them slip to 97-5 by the 16th over.

Opener Johnson Charles was dismissed for a golden duck. Although Nicholas Pooran (27) and Brandon King (34) put on a 53-run partnership for the second wicket, their dismissals triggered a middle-order wobble.

Roston Chase and Andre Russell Steer West Indies Home

With the game in the balance, Roston Chase and Andre Russell stepped up for the West Indies. Chase scored an unbeaten 42 off 27 balls, while Russell added 15 not out off 9 balls.

Their unbroken 40-run partnership from 18 balls ensured the West Indies reached their target with an over to spare, avoiding what could have been a major upset.

Post-Match Reactions

Reflecting on the match, Roston Chase acknowledged PNG’s competitive spirit. “PNG is not an A-list team, but they deserve to be here, and we’re not underestimating anyone.

We treated them like an India or Australia, but we probably lacked a bit of intensity at the start,” Chase said.

West Indies captain Rovman Powell praised PNG for their performance. “Credit has to be given to PNG; their plans were simple, and they played good cricket,” Powell remarked.

He admitted that the hosts were under pressure at 97-5 but expressed relief that his team managed to secure the win.

Looking Ahead

Papua New Guinea will face Uganda in Guyana on Thursday, while the West Indies will play against Uganda at the same venue on Sunday, June 9.

Wrap up

The West Indies’ five-wicket win over Papua New Guinea was a reminder of the challenges and unpredictability inherent in T20 cricket.

While the hosts eventually prevailed, the spirited performance by PNG highlighted the competitive nature of the tournament.

As the T20 World Cup continues, fans can expect more thrilling matches and unexpected twists.
