Jony Ive & Sam Altman AI Venture Eyes $1 Billion Funding Goal

Jony Ive Sam Altman AI Company Billion Funding

According to sources familiar with the plans, Jony Ive, former Apple design lead, and Sam Altman, current OpenAI CEO, are looking for funding to launch a new company.

This company wants to develop a personal artificial intelligence device.

According to the sources, the device will not resemble a smartphone, although its exact appearance remains a mystery. We initially learned about this endeavor in the autumn of 2023, but according to The Information’s report, discussions are progressing to establish the company.

For the new business, Jony Ive and Sam Altman want to raise at least $1 billion. The full list of potential funding sources they have spoken with is unknown, despite claims made by The Information’s sources that they are in discussions with Laurene Powell Jobs’ venture capital firm Emerson Collective and Thrive Capital, a frequent OpenAI investor.

It has been reported that Masayoshi Son, the CEO of SoftBank and a prominent investor, has also had discussions with Altman and Ive regarding the venture. According to a previous report by the Financial Times, Son expressed his desire for Arm, another company he has supported, to be part of the project.

Clearly, these are some of the most highly recognized and renowned names in today’s tech industry. Personal connections might have an influence; for instance, it is rumored that Jobs had a close relationship with both Jony Ive and Altman. That could be a concern, as the involvement of well-known individuals may deter smaller investors due to the potential increase in the initial investment cost.

Even though there is currently limited information available about the device, it seems probable that it would place Ive in direct competition with his former employer, Apple. There have been reports indicating that Apple is currently developing advanced AI capabilities for future versions of iOS, which will be available on iPhones, iPads, and other Apple devices.

Altman is involved in multiple AI ventures, in addition to OpenAI. According to The Information, it is currently unclear whether OpenAI will have any direct involvement in the new hardware company.
