The 2026 men’s World Cup final will take place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, as FIFA, the governing body of world football, has selected this venue over the ones in Dallas and Los Angeles.

The home of the New York Giants and the New York Jets has been chosen as the venue for world football’s most prestigious match, surpassing Dallas’ AT&T Stadium and L.A.’s SoFi Stadium. Dallas, however, will be the venue for the highest number of matches at the tournament, totaling nine. On the other hand, L.A. will proudly host the opening game of the tournament for the U.S. on June 12.

On June 11, the opening game of the 2026 World Cup will take place at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca. The opening fixture for Canada will take place a day later at Toronto’s BMO Field.

The third-placed play-off game will take place at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, while the semi-finals will be held at Dallas and Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Metlife Stadium to Host 2026 World Cup Final

FIFA organized a meeting at the Park Lane Hotel in London in January to discuss the venue for the 2026 final. Council members gathered before the Best Awards, which took place later that evening.

In September, New Jersey’s governor, Phil Murphy, had discussions with FIFA and expressed optimism about the selection of MetLife Stadium for the match.

Historically known for hosting NFL games, the stadium, which can hold up to 82,500 people, welcomed its first soccer match in May 2010, just a month after it opened. Since then, it has been the site of various international and club fixtures over the past 14 years. The 2024 Copa America will feature three matches, including a highly anticipated semi-final match.

The tournament will now feature 12 four-nation groups, with the top two teams from each group moving on to the knockout stages. Additionally, the eight best-performing third-placed teams will also advance.

There has been a new addition to the tournament: a last-32 stage. This means that the total number of matches in the tournament has increased from 64 to 104.

The 2026 World Cup will take place in a total of 16 stadiums. The U.S. cities of New York, Dallas, Miami, Kansas City, Houston, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Seattle, San Francisco, and Boston will be hosting the games. Mexico’s Monterrey, Guadalajara, and Mexico City, as well as Canada’s Vancouver and Toronto, will also be part of this exciting event.

What New Jersey will Bring?

The New Jersey venue was established in 2009. World Cup games have been played in the Meadowlands, specifically at Giants Stadium. However, Giants Stadium has since been demolished to make room for the neighboring MetLife Stadium. In 2016, MetLife had the privilege of hosting the Copa America final between Chile and Argentina. According to an agency spokesperson, the stadium will be using $400,000 (£313,000) in funds from the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority (NJSEA) to convert the field to grass for this summer’s Copa America fixtures. The NJSEA holds the land lease where MetLife stands.

There is a growing demand for more bus routes in the region, as officials in New Jersey are working diligently to construct a transitway before the 2026 tournament. In July, the board of NJ Transit, the state’s public transportation system, approved $35 million in spending to fully design a new corridor from Secaucus to MetLife Stadium. This corridor will connect to Secaucus Junction, a regional transit hub.

For large events at MetLife, a convenient train service is available to connect Secaucus Junction with the Meadowlands Rail Station at the stadium. While the service is generally user-friendly, it has had its fair share of imperfections. Residents may recall certain unsuccessful transportation incidents, such as the situation during the 2014 Super Bowl, where numerous fans experienced lengthy delays while attempting to return home from the event. There was a similar situation in 2019 involving WrestleMania.

Recently, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour went smoothly for three performances over one holiday weekend. It’s possible that the tour was scheduled on a weekend in the summer, when many people in the New York metro area prefer to escape the city heat by heading to Long Island or the Jersey Shore.
