5 Things Nobody Tells You About Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship

On the outside, looking in, entrepreneurship looks exciting, especially when you see startups succeed. Becoming a business owner has been romanticized as the quickest way to financial freedom.

However, what most people don’t know is that entrepreneurship has numerous challenges. In fact, according to statistics, approximately 20% of new businesses fail during the first two years. So, what are some of the things nobody tells you about entrepreneurship? Let’s take a look at them.

1.  You Have to Wait to See Returns

Most people go into entrepreneurship with high expectations. They think they can be the next Jeff Bezos or Bill Gates. Although 84% of billionaires in the world are self-made, they didn’t become successful in an instant. On average, it takes two to three years for a business to start making profits. Sometimes it takes longer, depending on the startup costs. Therefore, you have to be patient as you wait to break even and start making money.

2.  You’ll Experience Highs and Lows

Entrepreneurship is a rollercoaster, some days will be good, some days will be bad. You might hit all your sales targets one month and make losses the next two months. Entrepreneurship is a learning curve and is filled with a lot of highs and lows. In order to succeed, you need to face the challenges head on and learn from your mistakes. As your business grows, you’ll experience more highs than lows.

3.  You Need A Network

According to a study, 78% of startups consider business networking an integral part of their success. You need to build a strong network if you want your business to grow and become profitable.  Networking gives you access to opportunities you might not be able to find on your own.

Apart from expanding your professional connections, networking is a great way to boost your visibility, attract new customers, and gain more exposure. This is important because your business growth is dependent on your connections.

4.  It Can Be Overwhelming and Financially Draining

A high number of people quit their 9-5 jobs because they get overwhelmed and suffer from burnout. But entrepreneurship is much more demanding. Instead of working eight hours a day, you may start working 13 or 14 hours, especially when your business is young. Your customers may expect you to be available all the time.

For instance, if you offer financial services, people looking for loans may expect quick service. Those who find your business using search terms like “car title loans near me” may expect to get loans on the same day–even if it’s a weekend. Therefore, you’ll need to work longer or hire employees to work in shifts.  In the beginning, you need your business to stand out from others, and providing fast service could be what sets you apart.  However you look at it, starting a business can be physically and emotionally exhausting.

5.  You Need a Great Team

For your business to grow and succeed, it must have the best employees. Recruiting top talent is critical to business success as employees are a key source of competitive advantage. The right employees can boost productivity across the company and provide excellent customer service which is needed to drive profitability.

Entrepreneurship is not for the faint-hearted. While some days will be good, you’ll face many challenges along the way. To succeed, you’ll need to embrace all the highs and lows and learn from your mistakes.
