Player Ratings: Real Madrid 2 – 1 Bayern Munich; 2024 UEFA Champions League Semi-Final

Champions League Semi Final Player Ratings

Real Madrid once again showcased their never-say-die attitude and penchant for dramatic comebacks as they staged a remarkable late turnaround to secure their place in the UEFA Champions League final.

The Spanish giants found themselves trailing Bayern Munich in the second leg of their semi-final tie at the Allianz Arena, but their resilience and sheer determination paid off in the match’s dying moments.

The Thrilling Encounter:

The match was a tense and hard-fought affair, with both teams displaying their utmost commitment and desire to reach the coveted final.

Bayern Munich, led by their talismanic striker Robert Lewandowski, took the lead and appeared to be on course for a famous victory. However, Real Madrid‘s indomitable spirit and belief in their ability to overcome any obstacle proved too strong to resist.

In the 88th minute, the decisive moment arrived. After a series of incisive passes and relentless pressure, the ball fell kindly to the feet of the substitute Joselu, who made no mistake in firing it past the Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to level the scores.

The noise inside the Allianz Arena was deafening as Real Madrid’s traveling fans erupted in jubilation, sensing that their team’s never-say-die attitude might once again prevail.

Just two minutes later, the unthinkable happened. Joselu, who had only been on the pitch for a matter of minutes, found himself in the right place at the right time once again, capitalizing on a well-worked team move to fire home the winner and send the Real Madrid bench and fans into raptures.

The final whistle blew shortly after, and Real Madrid had sealed their passage to the Champions League final in dramatic fashion, much to the dismay of the home fans and the Bayern Munich players, who had given their all but ultimately fell short.

Full Match Player Ratings

Andriy Lunin – 7: The Real Madrid goalkeeper had a relatively quiet night but did everything he needed to when called upon. He made four crucial saves, two of them from inside the box, and confidently claimed a late cross to see out the victory.

Dani Carvajal – 7.5: The experienced right-back put in a solid defensive performance, coping well with the pace and trickery of Bayern’s attacking trio of Gnabry, Musiala, and Davies. This will be his sixth Champions League final appearance, a testament to his longevity and pedigree at the highest level.

Antonio Rüdiger – 8.5: The German center-back was a rock at the heart of Real Madrid’s defense, displaying his trademark tenacity and determination. He fought for every ball as if it were his last and provided a crucial assist for the equalizing goal, delivering a precise left-footed cross from inside the box towards the face of the Bayern goal.

Nacho – 7.5: The versatile defender hardly put a foot wrong throughout the match. He showcased his pace and anticipation by outmuscling Sane on what could have been a dangerous Bayern counter-attack in the first half. Nacho also played a key role in the game-winning goal, feeding Rüdiger the pass that led to the assist for Joselu’s strike.

Ferland Mendy – 7: The French left-back had his hands full with the tricky Leroy Sane, who was Bayern’s biggest threat over the two legs. However, Mendy managed the duel well in the second leg, and his composure and positioning were crucial in a late 3-on-1 situation, where he was the lone defender and his defensive work kept Real Madrid in the match.

Aurélien Tchouameni – 6: The young French midfielder had to cover a lot of ground whenever Bayern looked to counter-attack. While it may not have been his best performance, Tchouameni kept things simple in possession and helped Real Madrid maintain control for large periods of the game.

Fede Valverde – 6: Like his midfield partner Tchouameni, Valverde was not at his absolute best, but he looked to take advantage of his athleticism and work rate when matched up against Bayern’s Josip Pavlović.

Toni Kroos – 9: The German maestro delivered yet another masterclass in one of the biggest games of the season. Kroos was the heartbeat of the Real Madrid team, registering a game-high four key passes, amassing 112 touches, completing an impressive 95 out of 101 passes, and delivering 18 out of 20 accurate long balls. His defensive contributions were equally crucial, with countless well-timed interceptions and challenges.

Jude Bellingham – 6.5: While the young Englishman may not have made a significant offensive contribution, his night will be remembered for his relentless work rate and defensive discipline. Bellingham put in several well-timed challenges just outside the Real Madrid box, denying Bayern potentially dangerous goal-scoring opportunities.

Rodrygo – 5: It was a rough night for the Brazilian winger, who missed two clear-cut chances created by his compatriot Vinicius Junior.

Vinicius Junior – 9: The man of the match alongside Toni Kroos. Vinicius Junior was simply unstoppable, tormenting the Bayern defense with his blistering pace and trickery. He completed seven successful dribbles, most of them against Kimmich and De Ligt, and did everything in his power to propel Real Madrid to the final. Had it not been for some heroic saves from Manuel Neuer, the Brazilian would have had a couple of goals to his name. It was one such save from a Vinicius shot that led to the rebound for Joselu’s equalizer. On the biggest stage and the biggest nights, Vinicius Junior always delivers.

Substitutions:

Luka Modrić – 7.5: The Croatian maestro was brought on to replace Kroos and immediately injected energy and urgency into Real Madrid’s game. Modrić raised the tempo and improved the rhythm of his team’s play late in the second half, turning the tide in their favor. In the final minutes, he burst a lung to track back and dispossess Bayern on a dangerous 3-on-1 counter-attack.

Eduardo Camavinga – 6.5: The young Frenchman was introduced alongside Modrić in a double substitution aimed at freshening up Real Madrid’s midfield and turning the game in their favor.

Joselu – 9: The hero of the night, Joselu experienced one of the greatest moments of his career. First, he equalized in the 88th minute with a composed finish, and then, just two minutes later, he scored the winning goal in stoppage time to send Real Madrid to their 15th European Cup final at Wembley. A night he will never forget.

Brahim Díaz – N/A: Brought on alongside Joselu for the final 10 minutes to help see out the victory.

Éder Militão – N/A: Substituted on in the 100th minute to add defensive reinforcement and run down the clock.

Real Madrid’s dramatic late comeback against Bayern Munich will go down in Champions League folklore.

It was a testament to their unwavering spirit, mental fortitude, and belief in their ability to defy the odds.

As they gear up for yet another Champions League final, the Spanish giants have once again demonstrated why they are considered one of the most successful and formidable teams in European football history.
