The major film winners of the strike-affected 2024 Writers Guild Awards were Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction and Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers, which were announced on Sunday in New York and Los Angeles.
Following his Oscar victory for adapted screenplay, Jefferson received the Paul Selvin Award from the WGA West. The bizarre, extravagant, and extended awards season concluded with concurrent ceremonies on both coasts for the WGA. After Justine Triet and Arthur Harari won the Original Screenplay Academy Award for Anatomy of a Fall, Payne exacted a little measure of revenge.
But the later script was not a Writers Guild Award contender. That’s because, in contrast to other guilds, the WGA considers any scripts for motion pictures that aren’t prepared in accordance with its Minimum Basic Agreement or a legitimate collective bargaining agreement with different affiliated nations to be disqualified.
Errol Morris later won the documentary prize for his Apple film, The Pigeon Tunnel.
Following the conclusion of the Oscars last month, the WGA will be the final organization to offer 2023–24 honors.
The Bear on FX, Succession on HBO, and Beef on Netflix concluded their respective awards-season sweepstakes in the categories of drama series, comedy series, and limited series. all won awards at the SAG Awards, Critics’ Choice, Golden Globes, and Emmys in the past few months.
Following Peacock’s Poker Face’s victory in the Episodic Comedy category, Succession was awarded the prize for Episodic Drama for the “Living+” episode.
HBO’s The Last of Us took home the WGA Award for New Series, while The Simpsons from Fox took home the Animation trophy for the episode “Carl Carlson Rides Again.”
On Sunday night, the guild honored and paid tribute to several people.
The leadership and members of IATSE, the Teamsters, SAG-AFTRA, and the American Federation of Musicians received the WGA East’s Richard B. Jablow Award in an unexpected celebration in recognition of their dedication and support during the 148-day WGA strike last year.
The WGA East also awarded the Ian McLellan Hunter Award for Career Achievement to Tony Gilroy, honored Philadelphia author Ron Nyswaner with the Walter Bernstein Award, and honored Wanda Sykes with the Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence.
Creator of Designing Women and Evening Shade Linda Bloodworth Thomason received the highest prize from the WGA West, the Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television Writing Achievement. The WGAW Morgan Cox Award awarded to Chris Keyser and David A. Goodman, while Walter Hill, who wrote, directed, and/or produced a number of films, including 48 Hours, The Warriors, The Getaway, and many more, was given the Laurel Award for lifetime achievement.
Josh Gondelman emceed the New York ceremony in the Edison Ballroom in Manhattan, while Niecy Nash-Betts hosted the Los Angeles ceremony from the Hollywood Palladium. The 2024 Writers Guild Awards winners are as follows:
