Shaq, Kenny React to TNT’s Halftime Play of Kendrick’s Drake Diss ‘Euphoria

TNT Plays Euphoria Halftime Shaq Kenny Laugh

On Wednesday night, during the pivotal Game 5 of the Mavericks-Clippers series, the two teams faced off in Los Angeles, with the series tied at 2-2. The first half was a closely contested battle until the Mavericks went on a late second-quarter run to establish a 10-point lead at halftime.

As the halftime show began on TNT, the studio crew consisting of Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith, and Ernie Johnson prepared to analyze the first half of the game.

However, before diving into the basketball discussion, TNT’s production team decided to acknowledge the biggest story in pop culture that day. As Ernie Johnson began his introduction, the transition from the booth in L.A. to the studio in Atlanta featured Kendrick Lamar‘s newly released Drake Diss track, “Euphoria.” Interestingly, only half of the studio crew recognized the song playing in the background.

Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith, both known for their connection to music, immediately noticed the track and chuckled at the realization that they were suddenly in the middle of the rap beef between the two artists.

Shaq, who is also a DJ, and Kenny, who stays up-to-date with new music, found the situation amusing. On the other hand, Ernie Johnson and Charles Barkley, who are older and have different musical tastes, seemed oblivious to the significance of the moment.

Kenny Smith jokingly suggested that by playing Kendrick Lamar’s diss track, they were inserting themselves into the rap beef. To maintain neutrality in the ongoing battle between the Los Angeles and Toronto artists, he proposed that they should also play Drake’s “Push Ups.”

The incident highlights the generational and cultural differences among the TNT studio crew. While Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith are well-versed in contemporary music and quick to recognize the Drake Diss track, Ernie Johnson and Charles Barkley, who have different musical preferences, remained unaware of the song’s significance.

The production team’s decision to play “Euphoria” during the halftime transition provided a brief moment of levity, adding an unexpected layer of entertainment to the NBA playoff coverage. It showcased how the worlds of sports and pop culture often intersect, capturing the attention of fans and media alike.

As the halftime show continued, the crew likely shifted their focus back to analyzing the game, breaking down the key plays, and discussing the adjustments each team needed to make in the second half. With the Mavericks holding a 10-point lead, the Clippers faced the challenge of mounting a comeback to avoid falling behind in the series.

The incident serves as a reminder of the diverse personalities and interests that make up the popular TNT studio crew, adding to the entertaining dynamic that has made them a favorite among NBA fans.
