Explore the Latest Pixel Launcher Upgrades in Android 15!

Pixel Launcher Upgrades in Android 15

Android users have long enjoyed the customizability offered by their smartphones, especially when it comes to home screen launchers. While most users stick with the default launcher provided by their device manufacturer, like the Pixel Launcher on Google’s Pixel phones, these launchers continue to evolve with each new Android release. The upcoming Android 15 update is set to bring several tweaks and improvements to the Pixel Launcher, enhancing the app launch experience for users.

Faster and Springier Swipe-to-Home Animation

One of the noticeable changes in Android 15 will be the animation that plays when you swipe up on an app to return to the home screen. The new animation is faster, springier, and better highlights the wallpaper zoom effect compared to the current animation in Android 14. This subtle change will make navigating back to the home screen feel more responsive and visually appealing.

Improved Widget Recommendations

The Pixel Launcher’s widget recommendations are also getting an upgrade in Android 15. Currently, when you open the widget selector, a seemingly random widget appears at the top of the page without any explanation as to why it was chosen. The new recommendation system will provide more options for users, categorized by type, making it easier to find a widget that suits their needs.

Some of the recommendation categories spotted in testing include Essentials, Social, and Entertainment. However, a closer look at the Pixel Launcher’s code reveals additional categories such as Health & fitness, News & magazines, Suggested for you, Your Chill Zone, and Weather. Interestingly, some third-party app widgets were also recommended, suggesting that the Pixel Launcher may be using an algorithmic approach to recommendations rather than a hardcoded list.

Easier Widget Addition with “+ Add” Button

Another widget-related improvement in Android 15 is the introduction of a “+ Add” button in the Pixel Launcher’s widget selector. This button simplifies the process of adding a widget to the home screen by eliminating the need to press, hold, and drag the widget. Instead, users can simply tap “+ Add,” and the Pixel Launcher will automatically place the selected widget in an empty spot on the home screen.

Recent Screen UI Enhancements

The Pixel Launcher in Android 15 is also preparing to improve the recent screen UI, which is powered by a module within the system launcher app called QuickStep. While the horizontal carousel of recently opened apps will remain the same, the method to access the menu containing buttons for app info, split screen mode, and app pausing will change.

In Android 14, this menu is accessed by long-pressing on an app’s icon in the recents screen, which may not be obvious to some users. Android 15 aims to fix this by adding a small pill near the top of each app in the recents screen, containing the app’s icon, name, and a drop-down arrow to open the menu. This change should make these buttons more easily discoverable and accessible.

Availability and Rollout

It’s important to note that these changes to the Pixel Launcher are not yet live in Android 15 beta 1 and were only showcased by enabling certain flags manually. As a result, it’s possible that some of these changes may not make it to the stable version of Android 15, which is expected to release later this year. However, given the positive impact these subtle changes have on the app launch experience, it’s likely that most, if not all, will be included in the final release.

Since the Pixel Launcher is exclusive to Google’s Pixel devices, it remains uncertain how many of these changes will be integrated into the stock launcher in AOSP and, subsequently, whether devices from other OEMs will receive these improvements in their respective Android 15 updates.

Conclusion

Android 15 is shaping up to bring a host of refinements to the Pixel Launcher, making the app launching experience more intuitive, responsive, and customizable for users. From faster animations and improved widget recommendations to easier widget addition and recent screen enhancements, these changes demonstrate Google’s commitment to continuously improving the user experience on its Pixel devices. As the stable release of Android 15 approaches, Pixel users can look forward to enjoying these new features and improvements in their daily smartphone interactions.
