Mexican Navy Ship Hits Brooklyn Bridge, 2 Dead, 19 Injured

Mexican Navy Ship Brooklyn Bridge Crash

On the evening of Saturday, May 17, 2025, a tragic maritime accident shook New York City when the Mexican Navy’s training vessel ARM Cuauhtémoc collided with the Brooklyn Bridge, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. The collision left two people dead, at least 19 others injured, and caused temporary panic along the waterfront as onlookers watched the towering masts of the tall ship strike the bridge.

The vessel was on a goodwill training mission and had been docked in New York since May 13. The incident occurred while it was attempting to leave Pier 17 in Lower Manhattan and navigate through the East River during an international tour.

What Happened: Ship Loses Power, Strikes Bridge

According to a statement from New York City Mayor Eric Adams, the Cuauhtémoc lost power shortly before 8:30 p.m. as it passed beneath the Brooklyn Bridge. As a result, it drifted off course and struck the bridge’s lower deck supports with its three tall masts.

Footage captured by onlookers shows the vessel’s rigging scraping and eventually slamming into the bottom of the bridge. The sound of the impact startled crowds gathered along the South Street Seaport and Dumbo waterfronts.

Several crew members, many of them young cadets, were reportedly standing on the masts at the time of the crash, preparing for the ship’s ceremonial departure. When the masts snapped, parts of the rigging fell onto the deck, injuring those below and throwing some into dangerous positions on the ship’s superstructure.

Human Toll: Two Lives Lost, Multiple Hospitalized

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mayor Adams confirmed the death of two crew members due to injuries sustained in the incident. Another 19 people were injured, including four in critical condition. All injured personnel were transported to local hospitals by the FDNY and EMS units, which responded promptly alongside the NYPD Harbor Unit.

The New York Coast Guard confirmed that all 277 individuals aboard the ship have been accounted for. Fortunately, no one fell into the water during the accident, and emergency responders were able to secure the vessel and rescue the injured swiftly.

The Mexican Navy initially reported 22 injured in total, highlighting minor discrepancies between official reports during the early hours of crisis.

The Vessel: Cuauhtémoc’s Proud Naval Legacy

The ARM Cuauhtémoc is a three-masted barque measuring 297 feet (91 meters) in length and 40 feet (12 meters) wide. The ship was built in Bilbao, Spain, and entered service in 1982. Since then, it has played a critical role in the final stage of training for naval cadets of the Mexican Navy.

Every year, following the conclusion of academic instruction, the ship sets sail from Mexico with a full complement of cadets to visit ports around the world. This voyage allows young naval officers to gain firsthand experience with international navigation, naval protocol, and diplomatic presence.

This year’s voyage began on April 6 from the Mexican port of Acapulco, with plans to visit 22 international ports across 15 countries. The journey was scheduled to culminate in Iceland, with stops including major ports in the U.S., Europe, and Latin America.

Emergency Response and Area Closure

Following the incident, New York authorities quickly cordoned off the impacted areas. The NYPD advised residents and tourists to avoid the vicinity of the Brooklyn Bridge, South Street Seaport, and Dumbo, due to the heavy presence of emergency responders.

“Expect heavy traffic and a large presence of emergency vehicles in the surrounding area,” the NYPD posted on social media.

Tugboats later towed the Cuauhtémoc away from the bridge to a secure harbor, where it is currently being inspected. Damage to the ship includes the loss of the top sections of two masts, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Fortunately, structural engineers have confirmed that the Brooklyn Bridge did not suffer any major damage. A quick inspection allowed authorities to reopen traffic on the bridge a few hours later.

What Caused the Crash?

Officials from both the U.S. Coast Guard and Mexican Navy are investigating the incident. Preliminary findings suggest mechanical failure — possibly involving an engine or generator — may have triggered a loss of power, which in turn prevented the crew from steering the ship safely beneath the bridge.

Speaking to local press, NYPD Chief of Operations Jeffrey Maddrey said the ship “drifted uncontrollably after losing propulsion,” striking the lower support of the bridge just as the tide began to change.

This was compounded by the vessel’s tall rigging and limited clearance, which always make maneuvering under the bridge a delicate operation — one made near-impossible without power.

Eyewitness Reactions and Viral Footage

Dozens of people on the Manhattan and Brooklyn waterfronts were enjoying the early summer evening when the crash occurred. Several witnesses caught the moment on smartphone videos, which have since gone viral on platforms like TikTok, X, and YouTube.

One witness described seeing the ship’s towering masts “bend like twigs” before the sound of snapping rigging echoed across the river. Others said they initially believed it was a fireworks display or construction mishap.

Crowds were seen screaming and running from the edge of the water as the impact reverberated through the area.

International Reaction and Diplomatic Support

The Mexican Ambassador to the United States, Esteban Moctezuma, issued a formal statement expressing deep sorrow for the lives lost and gratitude for the fast response by New York authorities.

He described the Cuauhtémoc as “a symbol of Mexico’s maritime tradition and global friendship,” and pledged full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.

The Mexican Navy has also launched an internal probe to determine the exact nature of the mechanical failure and assess whether maintenance or procedural lapses played a role.

Safety Protocols Under Review

As the incident garners international attention, maritime safety experts have called for a renewed focus on protocols for tall ships navigating urban waterways, especially those with overhead structures like the Brooklyn Bridge.

U.S. Coast Guard investigators, in coordination with local port authorities and international maritime agencies, will assess whether the Cuauhtémoc was given appropriate clearance, whether tide and wind conditions were accounted for, and whether power systems were adequately tested prior to departure.

The tragic collision of the ARM Cuauhtémoc with the Brooklyn Bridge is a painful reminder of the risks involved in maritime navigation — even in controlled, ceremonial circumstances. With two lives lost and nearly 20 others injured, questions will now focus on ensuring this kind of accident never happens again.

The city of New York, alongside international partners, continues to support the recovery of the affected individuals and honor the vessel’s symbolic mission. For now, investigations are ongoing — and the story of the Cuauhtémoc will remain one of both diplomatic outreach and sudden tragedy.
