Luis Díaz Set to Join Bayern in £65.5M Transfer from Liverpool

Luis Díaz Set to Join Bayern

Bayern Munich has agreed to a €75 million transfer package, including add-ons, with Liverpool for the signing of Colombian winger Luis Díaz. The transfer marks a significant summer acquisition for the German champions as they strengthen their attacking lineup ahead of the 2025–26 season.

The initial offer made by Bayern earlier in July—reported to be around £58.6 million—was rejected by Liverpool. However, continued negotiations between the clubs led to a revised agreement worth €75 million (£65.5 million), now accepted by the Premier League side.

As part of the transfer process, Díaz has been released from Liverpool’s Asia pre-season tour, where the team is currently based, to travel to Europe and complete his medical examination. The 28-year-old was notably absent from the squad that played in a 4-2 pre-season loss to AC Milan in Hong Kong, a decision believed to be directly related to the final stages of the transfer deal.

Luis Díaz’s Journey at Liverpool: Stats, Titles, and Performances

Luis Díaz joined Liverpool in January 2022 from FC Porto, with an initial transfer fee of £37 million, rising with add-ons. Since arriving at Anfield, the Colombian international has become a consistent part of the squad, known for his pace, creativity, and work ethic.

Across 148 appearances for Liverpool, Díaz scored 41 goals, contributing across the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, domestic cups, and international club competitions. His role grew steadily under manager Jürgen Klopp, particularly during Liverpool’s title-winning season.

In the 2024–25 season, Díaz enjoyed the most prolific scoring run of his career, registering 17 goals in all competitions. Of those, 13 came in the Premier League, where he played a key role in Liverpool clinching the league title, cementing his status as one of the club’s top-performing forwards during the campaign.

His sharp runs, ability to cut inside from the left wing, and capacity to combine well with teammates like Mohamed Salah and Darwin Núñez made him a critical component in Liverpool’s attacking strategies.

Why Bayern Munich Targeted Luis Díaz

Bayern Munich’s interest in Díaz is driven by both strategic need and statistical performance. The Bundesliga side is preparing for the new season following a campaign in which they secured their 34th league title but faced setbacks in other competitions. Despite scoring a league-high 99 goals, Bayern were knocked out of the German Cup (DFB-Pokal) in the Round of 16 and eliminated from the Champions League in the quarter-finals.

The team also suffered a major blow when Jamal Musiala, one of their standout attacking talents, suffered a broken leg and a dislocated ankle during the FIFA Club World Cup, ruling him out for an extended period. With Musiala expected to be sidelined for months, Bayern sought a top-tier replacement capable of contributing immediately in both domestic and European competitions.

Luis Díaz fits that profile. His performances in England during the 2024–25 season demonstrated a significant increase in end-product and consistency. His shot conversion rate stood at 18.3%, his best in the Premier League, and a reflection of his improved finishing and shot selection.

Díaz’s 2024–25 Premier League Stats: A Deep Dive

In addition to his goal tally, Díaz’s overall attacking contributions ranked among the top forwards in England. Though he did not crack the official top 10, he came close across multiple key metrics:

  • Goals + Assists Combined: 18 (just outside the Premier League’s top 10)

  • Shots on Target: 30

  • Chances Created: 56

  • Dribbles Completed: 52

These figures demonstrate his ability to not only finish chances but also create opportunities for teammates and progress the ball through skillful dribbling and positional awareness.

On the defensive side, Díaz’s pressing and work rate also stood out. He won possession in the final third 22 times, more than any other Liverpool player relative to time played. This showcases his role in Liverpool’s high-pressing strategy, recovering the ball quickly and initiating counterattacks—an approach that aligns closely with Bayern Munich’s tactical identity.

Liverpool’s Forward Line Reshaped Ahead of 2025–26

With Díaz’s departure nearly finalized, Liverpool has already begun restructuring its attacking options. The club has signed two promising forwards this summer:

  • Florian Wirtz, the 21-year-old German playmaker from Bayer Leverkusen, known for his technical brilliance and creativity in tight spaces.

  • Hugo Ekitike, a 22-year-old French striker from Paris Saint-Germain, recognized for his pace and positional intelligence.

Liverpool is also reported to be pursuing Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, the Swedish striker who impressed in the Premier League with his finishing and mobility. If that deal materializes, Isak would add both depth and versatility to the frontline.

The club appears focused on younger talents with high ceilings, aiming to transition toward a more youthful core as part of their long-term rebuild following the departure of long-time manager Jürgen Klopp.

What Bayern Can Expect From Luis Díaz

At Bayern Munich, Díaz is expected to offer:

  • Positional Flexibility: Primarily a left-winger, Díaz can also play as a second striker or right winger depending on tactical demands.

  • Immediate Offensive Threat: With Musiala injured, Díaz could start immediately and support forwards like Harry Kane and Leroy Sané.

  • Defensive Work Rate: His ability to press and track back makes him ideal for Bayern’s aggressive style under new coach Vincent Kompany, who recently replaced Thomas Tuchel.

  • Champions League Experience: Díaz has played in multiple Champions League knockout matches, including finals and quarter-finals.

His arrival is part of Bayern’s broader effort to rebuild and refresh their squad with experienced, peak-age players who can make an impact from day one.

Medical, Contract, and Timeline

Díaz has been authorized to fly from Hong Kong to Europe for his medical assessment, which is expected to be completed within days. Once the medical is cleared and documents are signed, Bayern Munich will likely announce the signing officially.

He is expected to sign a long-term contract, possibly for four or five years, and will likely take a key squad number, depending on availability—possibly the No. 7 or 11 shirt.

A High-Stakes Move With Big Implications

The €75 million transfer of Luis Díaz to Bayern Munich marks one of the major moves of the summer window. It reflects both clubs’ evolving strategies—Bayern’s push for immediate European success and Liverpool’s shift toward long-term squad development.

Díaz’s transfer could prove crucial for Bayern’s domestic and Champions League campaigns, especially with injuries depleting their attacking ranks. For Díaz, this is an opportunity to test himself in another top European league, in a club with a storied history and high expectations.

If he replicates or exceeds his Premier League output, Díaz may well become one of the Bundesliga’s standout players in the seasons to come.
