Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, has recently shared his thoughts on the team’s remaining Premier League fixtures, with a focus on a couple of challenging away games.
After City’s impressive 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday, Guardiola didn’t mince his words when it came to the challenges that lie ahead. Despite the victory keeping them just one point behind table-toppers Arsenal (with a game in hand), Pep understands there’s still plenty of work ahead.
“Everything can happen,” Guardiola said, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the Premier League. “Liverpool have dropped points in the last few games, but that can happen to us; it can happen to Arsenal; so tough games for everyone.”
Guardiola specifically singled out two away fixtures that he thinks could prove to be particularly difficult for his side: Fulham and Tottenham. If you’ve been following the Premier League this season, you’ll know that Fulham has proven to be a formidable opponent at Craven Cottage, and Spurs are always a formidable opponent, particularly on their home ground.
It’s clear that Guardiola isn’t taking anything for granted, even with City’s impressive form and their position as reigning champions. He knows that every point is critical at this stage of the season, and he’ll expect his players to be at their best for these crucial away games.
Interestingly, Guardiola also mentioned that City will not participate in the Champions League semi-finals this year due to Real Madrid’s elimination in the previous round. While some managers may view this as a positive development, providing their players with additional time for rest and recovery, Pep appears to hold a different perspective.
“I would prefer not to have a long week off and to play in the Champions League semi-final,” he admitted. “But under the circumstances, we have two or three days to recover and prepare for all of our finals.”
It’s a testament to Guardiola’s winning mentality that he’d rather be competing on multiple fronts, even if it means a more congested fixture list. He sees every game as a final at this point, and he’ll expect his players to approach them with the same level of focus and intensity.
Pep Guardiola has set the bar high for his Manchester City team, recognizing Fulham and Tottenham as two formidable opponents in their pursuit of another Premier League title.
Will they rise to the challenge, or will one of these away days prove to be their undoing? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure: with Guardiola at the helm, City will be giving it everything they’ve got.
