The upcoming I/O developer conference by Google is scheduled to begin on May 14th, which is exactly two months from now.
Similar to the previous year, the I/O 2024 keynote will be presented in front of a select live audience and will also be accessible for virtual viewing by anyone.
This year’s I/O conference is expected to have a strong emphasis on AI, particularly with the recent release of Google’s new flagship AI model, Gemini, along with its smaller counterpart, Gemma.
The image generator of the Gemini bot sparked a controversy that Google CEO Sundar Pichai deemed “completely unacceptable” due to unintended consequences in its attempt to showcase diversity. In addition to the flubbed facts from Google’s Bard launch last year, the company will need to address how its technology will outperform competitors like Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic, and others. Despite having numerous AI advances to celebrate, Google will have to provide a compelling explanation for its competitive edge.
In addition, there will be discussions about the upcoming features in Android 15 and updates to various Google services such as Gmail and Google Photos. It’s possible that a new Pixel 8A smartphone will be unveiled at I/O. Last year, Google introduced the midrange 7A during the event, so it’s likely that its successor will be announced soon. The Pixel 8A might also incorporate some of the AI capabilities of the Pixel 8, but at a more affordable price.
