5 Essential Car Checks You Can Do in Under 5 Minutes

Essential Car Checks

When life gets busy, car maintenance can easily fall to the bottom of your to-do list. But keeping your vehicle in top shape doesn’t have to take hours. In fact, there are several quick and simple checks you can perform in just a few minutes that could save you money and prevent breakdowns later on. Here are five essential car checks that take less than five minutes each.

1. Check Your Tyre Pressure

Properly inflated tyres are critical for safety, fuel efficiency, and overall performance. Under-inflated tyres can cause uneven wear, reduce grip on the road, and increase fuel consumption. Most modern vehicles have a recommended pressure listed in the owner’s manual or inside the driver’s door frame.

To check tyre pressure, all you need is a reliable tyre pressure gauge. Simply remove the valve cap, press the gauge onto the valve, and compare the reading to your vehicle’s recommended PSI. Adjust as needed at a local air pump or petrol station. While you’re at it, inspect the tread depth and sidewalls for visible wear or damage. If you’re unsure or need replacements, consider professional tyre fitting to ensure your safety.

2. Inspect Fluid Levels

Fluids are the lifeblood of your vehicle, and checking them regularly can prevent serious engine damage. In just a few minutes, you can inspect:

  • Engine oil – Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it, and check the level.
  • Coolant – Look at the reservoir to make sure the level is between the min and max lines.
  • Brake fluid – Usually located on top of the master cylinder under the bonnet.
  • Windscreen washer fluid – Top up if low to ensure clear visibility.

If any fluids are significantly low or look dirty, it may be time for a service.

3. Test Lights and Indicators

Faulty lights can be both dangerous and illegal. With your car in park, turn on your headlights, brake lights, indicators, and hazard lights. Walk around your vehicle to ensure all are working properly. If a bulb is out, replacing it is often straightforward and inexpensive.

Ask a friend to help check your brake lights or back up to a reflective surface like a garage door to see them in action. Keeping lights functional is especially crucial for early morning or night driving.

4. Look for Dashboard Warning Lights

Before you drive off, take a glance at your dashboard when you start the engine. Warning lights often indicate issues with the engine, battery, brakes, or tyre pressure. Don’t ignore these alerts—addressing them early can prevent more serious and costly problems.

If a light stays on or flashes after a few seconds, consult your vehicle manual or visit a trusted mechanic.

5. Inspect Windscreen Wipers

Clear vision is a must in all weather conditions. Wiper blades typically last about 6–12 months. If they’re leaving streaks, skipping across the glass, or making noise, it’s time for a replacement. Also, ensure the windscreen washer nozzles aren’t clogged and spray effectively.

Taking just a few minutes a week to perform these essential checks can extend the life of your vehicle, improve your driving safety, and save money in the long run.
