Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez Apologizes for Racist Chant After Copa America Win

enzo fernandez apology racist chant copa america

Following Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time victory over Colombia in the Copa America final, the team celebrated their triumph on the team bus. The atmosphere was jubilant, with players singing and chanting.

However, the celebration turned dark when midfielder Enzo Fernandez posted a live video on Instagram capturing the team’s revelry.

The video, which showed Argentina’s players singing a racist and transphobic chant about French players, quickly sparked outrage and condemnation.

The Offensive Chant

The chant, which first gained notoriety during the 2022 World Cup, contains deeply offensive and derogatory references.

It falsely claims that France’s players are “all from Angola” and makes vile remarks about a supposed relationship between French star Kylian Mbappé and transgender model Ines Rau.

In Fernandez’s live broadcast, Argentina’s players can be heard singing the first lines of the song: “On passport, French nationality, listen, spread the word, they play in France, but they are all…” The video ends abruptly when someone says, “Cut the video.”

Immediate Backlash

The backlash was swift and severe. Fernandez’s Chelsea teammate, Wesley Fofana, who is of Ivorian descent, reposted the video on his social media accounts, calling it “uninhibited racism.”

The French Football Federation (FFF) also reacted strongly, with President Philippe Diallo pledging to file a complaint with FIFA over the “racist and discriminatory remarks” made by the Argentine players.

Enzo Fernandez Apologizes

Realizing the gravity of the situation, Enzo Fernandez quickly apologized on his Instagram story. “There is no excuse for these words,” he wrote.

“I stand against discrimination in all forms and apologize for getting caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations. That video, that moment, those words do not reflect my beliefs or my character. I am truly sorry.”

Fernandez’s apology was an attempt to mitigate the damage and express his remorse for the incident.

Reactions from the Football Community

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from the football community. The FFF’s statement emphasized that such behavior contradicts the values of sport and human rights.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino reiterated soccer’s zero-tolerance approach to racism and committed to relaunching a task force to monitor such incidents. “Racism has no place in football or society,” Infantino said. “We must work together to eradicate it.”

Impact on Fernandez’s Club Relations

The fallout from the incident has extended to Fernandez’s club, Chelsea. Reports suggest that the video deeply upset several of Fernandez’s French teammates, including Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, Wesley Fofana, Malo Gusto, Christopher Nkunku, and Lesley Ugochukwu.

Some of these players have reportedly unfollowed Fernandez on social media, reflecting their disapproval and disappointment. Chelsea is currently investigating the controversial footage, and it remains to be seen what actions the club will take.

FFF’s Legal Actions

The French Football Federation has taken a firm stance against the incident. President Philippe Diallo condemned the racist remarks and confirmed that the FFF would file a legal complaint with FIFA.

“Given the seriousness of these shocking remarks, which are contrary to the values of sport and human rights, we have decided to contact our Argentinian counterparts and FIFA directly,” Diallo stated.

The FFF’s commitment to pursuing legal action underscores the importance of addressing and rectifying such behavior.

Historical Context

This is not the first time such chants have surfaced. Similar derogatory chants were heard from some Argentina fans two years ago before the World Cup final between France and Argentina.

The chants target French players of African heritage, underscoring a persistent issue of racism within segments of football fandom. The recurrence of these chants highlights the need for continued efforts to combat racism and promote inclusivity in football.

Moving Forward

As the football world grapples with this incident, it serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against racism and discrimination in sports. Enzo Fernandez’s apology, while necessary, underscores the importance of education and awareness in preventing such incidents.

Both FIFA and national football federations must continue to enforce strict measures and promote inclusivity and respect within the sport. Initiatives to educate players and fans about the impact of racism are crucial in creating a more inclusive environment.

The incident involving Enzo Fernandez and the Argentina team’s racist chant has cast a shadow over their Copa America celebrations. The swift condemnation from the French Football Federation and the broader football community highlights the urgent need for continued efforts to combat racism in sports.

As Fernandez and his teammates return to their clubs, this incident serves as a poignant reminder of athletes’ responsibilities in upholding the values of respect and equality both on and off the field.

By addressing this issue head-on, the football community can take meaningful steps toward eradicating racism and fostering a culture of inclusivity and respect.
