DirecTV Drops Disney, ESPN, ABC: How to Watch US Open & NFL Games Now

directv drops disney espn abc watch us open nfl alternatives

With the US Open tennis tournament nearing its conclusion and the start of the NFL’s Monday Night Football season just around the corner, sports fans on DirecTV are feeling the heat. On Sunday, September 1st, Disney abruptly pulled all of its channels from DirecTV platforms due to a licensing disagreement. As a result, millions of subscribers lost access to popular programming, including ESPN, ABC, Hulu, Disney Plus, Freeform, FX, and more.

The timing couldn’t be worse, with the NFL season about to kick off and DirecTV customers anxiously waiting for sports coverage. This isn’t the first time viewers have faced such a situation with Disney—last year, Spectrum TV customers dealt with a similar blackout due to a contract dispute over fees. However, this year, the conflict between Disney and DirecTV appears to involve more than just pricing, which means it could take longer to resolve.

Let’s dive into the details of the dispute, who’s affected, and what DirecTV customers can do to work around the outage while awaiting a resolution.

What’s the Cause of the Dispute Between Disney and DirecTV?

While contract disputes over licensing fees between content providers and television distributors are fairly common, this particular disagreement goes beyond the usual back-and-forth over financial terms. According to DirecTV’s Chief Financial Officer, Ray Carpenter, this is not a standard renegotiation. During a conference call with investors on Tuesday, Carpenter explained that the disagreement is not just about “haggling over percentage points” on the price of content, as often happens in these situations.

“This is not a run-of-the-mill dispute,” Carpenter stated. “It’s more complex and involves deeper issues that go beyond just the rates we pay for Disney’s programming.”

Although neither Disney nor DirecTV has provided extensive details about what the dispute is specifically about, it is widely believed that broader industry issues, such as changes in viewing habits, streaming rights, and new business models, are at play. Disney’s programming is central to DirecTV’s offerings, particularly for sports fans who rely on ESPN for major events like Monday Night Football, college football, and the US Open. Losing these channels during such crucial moments adds even more pressure for both parties to come to an agreement quickly.

Which DirecTV Viewers Are Affected by the Disney Channel Blackout?

In its statement released on Sunday, DirecTV confirmed that millions of subscribers using DirecTV, DirecTV Stream, and U-verse services have been affected by the Disney blackout. This means customers no longer have access to major channels such as:

  • ESPN: A key channel for sports fans, especially during the NFL and college football seasons.
  • ABC: The home of popular programming like Good Morning America, The Bachelor, and prime-time shows.
  • Disney Plus: Disney’s flagship streaming service that offers movies and TV shows from the Disney library, as well as Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar content.
  • Hulu: A favorite for streaming both original and syndicated shows, movies, and live TV.
  • FX: Known for acclaimed series like American Horror Story, Fargo, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
  • Freeform: A network that caters to younger audiences with popular shows like Grown-ish and The Bold Type.

According to Statista, DirecTV had approximately 11.3 million subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2023, meaning a significant portion of the US population is affected by this blackout.

However, there’s a bit of a silver lining for some customers: if your local ABC affiliate station is not owned by Disney, you will still be able to watch your local ABC station via DirecTV’s satellite service. This only applies to the traditional satellite service, though, as customers trying to access ABC through streaming on the DirecTV app will still face interruptions.

When Can DirecTV Viewers Expect Disney Channels to Return?

Unfortunately, there’s no clear indication of when Disney and DirecTV will reach an agreement and restore the channels. Given that these types of disputes can sometimes drag on for weeks, it’s unclear if DirecTV subscribers will regain access to ESPN in time for key NFL games or the remainder of the US Open.

Last year, a similar licensing dispute between Disney and Spectrum TV, which began on August 31st, wasn’t resolved until September 11th. During that period, Spectrum TV viewers missed out on major sports events, and the blackout stirred significant customer backlash. This year’s situation with DirecTV could follow a similar timeline, or it could take even longer, depending on the depth of the issues involved.

DirecTV customers will be watching closely, especially as the first Monday Night Football game of the season approaches on September 9th, when the San Francisco 49ers are set to host the New York Jets. ESPN is a critical channel for sports coverage, and the absence of Disney channels during one of the biggest sports seasons of the year will undoubtedly intensify the pressure on both companies to come to a resolution.

What Can DirecTV Customers Do to Watch ESPN, ABC, and Other Disney Channels Now?

For DirecTV customers who can’t wait for the dispute to be resolved, there are a few alternatives for accessing Disney channels. Several streaming services offer access to Disney-owned networks, and some even come with free trials. Here are the best options:

  • YouTube TV: YouTube TV offers all the major Disney channels, including ESPN, ABC, FX, Disney Plus, and more. The base plan costs $73 per month, but the service offers a generous 21-day free trial. If you’re expecting Disney and DirecTV to resolve their differences soon, this trial period might be a good way to bridge the gap.
  • Hulu Plus Live TV: Hulu Plus Live TV is another option for watching Disney channels. It costs $77 per month and includes all Disney channels, including ESPN, Disney Plus, Freeform, and FX. New subscribers can take advantage of a three-day free trial.
  • Fubo: Fubo’s base plan offers all the major Disney channels, including ESPN and ABC, for $80 per month. They’re currently offering a seven-day free trial, and the first month is discounted to $50 for new customers.
  • Sling TV: Sling TV offers a more affordable option through its Sling Orange package, which includes most Disney channels for just $15 for the first month and $40 per month after that. However, if you want access to your local ABC station, you’ll need to either upgrade to Sling Blue or use an over-the-air antenna.

If your local ABC station is not owned by Disney, you can still access it via satellite through DirecTV. However, streaming the channel through the DirecTV app won’t be available until the dispute is resolved.

How to Get a Refund or Credit from DirecTV

DirecTV has acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the Disney blackout and is offering subscribers a credit on their bills to compensate for the lost channels. On its support page for missing channels, DirecTV states that the credit is “a small way to acknowledge the disruption and make up for the temporary inconvenience.”

To check if you’re eligible for the credit, visit DirecTV’s TV Promise page. From there, you’ll need to select your TV service (DirecTV, DirecTV Stream, or U-verse), enter your ZIP code, and search for eligibility. If you’re eligible for a credit, you can proceed to the Explore bill credits section of the page and follow the instructions to claim your compensation.

According to independent reports, including from CNET and Reddit, most customers are receiving a credit of around $20, which should be applied to their next bill. It’s unclear if this credit will be offered every month the dispute continues, so it’s worth keeping an eye on your bill if the blackout drags on.

What’s Next for DirecTV and Disney?

As of now, there’s no clear resolution in sight for the dispute between Disney and DirecTV, leaving millions of customers in limbo. While the two companies have a history of resolving these types of disputes, the complexity of the issues this year means it could take longer than usual to bring Disney channels back to DirecTV’s lineup.

In the meantime, DirecTV subscribers who don’t want to miss out on major sports events and other programming have several alternative streaming options, many of which offer free trials or discounted rates for new customers. Be sure to also check your eligibility for a billing credit from DirecTV to offset the inconvenience caused by the blackout.

For now, sports fans and entertainment lovers alike will have to wait and see how the dispute unfolds, hoping that both Disney and DirecTV can come to an agreement soon.
