Canon Celebrates 10 Years of Investing in Africa’s Youth: The Miraisha Program

Canon Miraisha Program 10 Years Investment Africa Youth

Canon is proudly celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Miraisha program, a groundbreaking initiative dedicated to empowering African youth through skills development and job creation.

Launched in 2014, the Miraisha program has significantly impacted the lives of thousands across the continent by providing comprehensive workshops for photographers, videographers, filmmakers, and print business owners.

This milestone marks a decade of Canon’s commitment to fostering talent, nurturing creativity, and supporting sustainable development in Africa.

Origins and Mission of the Miraisha Program

The name ‘Miraisha’ is a fusion of the Japanese word “Mirai,” meaning future, and the Swahili word “Maisha,” meaning livelihood. The program was designed to bridge cultural gaps and foster future livelihoods through skill development and job creation.

Since its inception, Miraisha has educated more than 7,000 professionals across Africa, helping them nurture their skills and creativity, secure employment, or set up their own businesses.

Significant Achievements and Partnerships

Over the past decade, Miraisha has established 33 partnerships with various organizations, including the Kenya Film Commission, Uganda Press Photo Awards, and the National Film and TV Institute of Ghana.

These collaborations have been instrumental in providing quality training and resources to aspiring professionals.

With a target to train 10,000 participants by 2027, the program continues to expand its reach and impact.

Celebrating a Decade of Impact

To commemorate the 10-year anniversary, Canon has planned a series of activities throughout the year.

These include the Miraisha Portfolio Review, where aspiring photographers over the age of 18 can submit their work to be reviewed by industry experts such as Rodney Quarcoo, Michel Lunanga, and Michael Asaad.

This unique opportunity allows young photographers to gain valuable insights and constructive feedback on their work.

Special Initiatives and Collaborations

One notable project under the Miraisha program involved a collaboration between The NRB Bus, Baru Collective, Pwani University, and The GoBlue Project in coastal Kenya.

These workshops supported young photographers and videographers in honing their skills, preserving their cultural heritage, and shaping it.

Participants found the hands-on experience invaluable, learning both technical and creative aspects of photography and videography.

Expanding Horizons with New Activities

Canon has also introduced new initiatives to celebrate this milestone. A coffee table book showcasing the outstanding work and achievements of Miraisha students and Canon trainers will be published.

This visually stunning publication will highlight inspiring success stories and key projects from the past decade. Additionally, Canon will host panel discussions with Miraisha partners focusing on the program’s role in addressing skills gaps across Africa.

These discussions aim to explore challenges and opportunities within the industry, providing a platform for in-depth exploration and idea exchange.

Online Training and Master Classes

To further support skill development, Canon will offer online training master classes conducted by industry experts in both English and French.

These sessions will focus on the business aspects of photography, helping participants develop the expertise necessary to start their own ventures or enhance their current business models.

Through these courses, participants will refine their techniques and acquire new skills under the guidance of seasoned professionals.

Canon’s Commitment to African Youth

Canon remains dedicated to nurturing young talent and driving positive change in Africa through the Miraisha program.

By providing access to essential skills, mentorship opportunities, and resources, Canon aims to unlock the full potential of Africa’s vibrant youth demographic.

This commitment not only drives economic growth and innovation but also contributes to societal progress across the continent. As Canon celebrates a decade of the Miraisha program, it reflects on the significant impact made in empowering African youth.

Through continued efforts and expanded initiatives, Canon reaffirms its dedication to supporting sustainable development and creating meaningful opportunities for the next generation of creative professionals in Africa.
