The Iconic and Legendary Rolex GMT-Master II

The Iconic and Legendary Rolex GMT-Master II

Rolex brands exemplify the hard work and innovation that led to the company’s great success. Wilsdorf and Davis Ltd. was established by German watchmaker Hans Wilhelm Wilsdorf and his English partner Alfred James Davis in 1905. Rolex was certified as a company in 1908. After several years of selling pocket and purse timepieces, the company took a significant step forward with the release of its first edition of wristwatches. In 1910, a Swiss watchmaker used Aegler’s mechanism in the world’s first timepiece to be awarded the Swiss Certificate of Precision

Rolex watches, widely associated with excellence and dependability, are designed for everyday wear and, depending on the model, are ideally adapted for a wide range of sports and other activities. These timepieces are built to last and are distinguished by their distinct and timeless aesthetics. The GMT-Master II is an excellent timepiece for traveling around the world.

Features of Rolex GMT-Master II

The iconic Rolex GMT Master II first emerged in 1955 and with an original red and blue color scheme generally referred to as the “Pepsi” bezel due to its similarity to the logo of the soda manufacturing company. The Perpetual GMT-Master II model was initially designed for pilots, which is why it includes appropriate functions for them, such as the presence of a second-time zone displayed in a 24-hour format. By rotating the bezel, you can also tell the time in the third zone.

  • Bezel, Dial, and Hands

This is the first piece in the world with a red bezel made of extremely durable ceramic. To prevent problems, Rolex outfitted its timepiece with an additional GMT hand and a dual-colored bezel that clearly shows whether it is night or day in that time zone. Aside from being very legible in that way, the innovative color scheme with the bezel divided into red and blue halves looked interesting and was highly sought after. The best way to make a bi-colored bezel back then was to include a transparent Plexiglas section that revealed painted surfaces beneath it.

The original iconic colors were hard to replicate until recently. This was due to the manufacturing process of ceramic parts. Mineral pigments are added into the solution during the manufacturing of Cerachrom bezels to add color. These minerals are used because they can withstand high temperatures, which are required to produce compact and resistant final products.

The brand honed a new approach that allowed it to create a dual-colored anodized aluminum bezel. Cermachrom inserts were first used by Rolex on its rotatable bezels. The obvious benefits of ceramic as a material are its shiny look and, more notably, its extraordinary resilience, because it does not corrode, is not affected by ultraviolet light, and is practically scratch-proof.

  • Case and Bracelet

The watch is housed in a round Oyster case with a diameter of 40 mm and a water resistance of 100 meters. The iconic fluting motif appears on the screw-down solid case-back. Its screw-down crown is crafted with a triple waterproofness system and is secured by a crown guard that is an integral part of the case’s mono-block middle section. The watch has a three-link Oyster bracelet with a polished middle section and two outer links with a satin finish. It is secured with a folding safety clasp, which is standard for the line of products. Its case and bracelet, both with reference number 116719BLRO, are made from white gold.

  • Movement

Rolex’s proprietary self-winding mechanical 3186 movements with 31 jewels and COSC chronometric certification is housed inside the white gold case of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II timepiece. Also, there is a stop-seconds feature for accurate adjustment, and the caliber’s functions conclude with an instantaneous date display executed through an aperture set at three o’clock. Caliber 3186 has a 4 Hz frequency and a magnetic resistant blue Parachrom hairspring, as well as a Breguet overcoil as well as massive balance with varying inertia. Its bidirectional winding allows it to store enough energy to power the watch for two days.

Celebrities Who Wear the GMT Master II

The GMT Master Watch is a celebrity favorite. While out for a run, Daniel Craig wears a GMT Master, and Clint Eastwood is on the phone during a scene. Gerard Depardieu, a French actor, captured a photograph that was inspired by Rodin’s The Thinker. Tom Selleck, the Only Hollywood Actor who Rocks his mustache, also owns a Pepsi GMT Master watch. In the 1976 film Marathon Man, Dustin Hoffman wore a Rolex GMT Master II Watch. George Eads from the hit television show CSI, who wears a Rolex GMT Master. Certain celebrities who have been seen wearing Rolex GMT Masters include Benicio del Toro in the role of Che Guevara, Arnold Schwarzenegger, cyclist Lance Armstrong, Air Force hero General Chuck Yeager, and the ageless action star Keanu Reeves, who wore a GMT Master in the 2008 film Street Kings.

Perpetual Oyster Line

Since the birth of the world’s first waterproof wristwatch, the Oyster, in 1926, all Rolex models have been known for their extreme dependability. Cases with hermetic seals were featured in the new line, ensuring resistance to shocks, pressure, dust, water, and any other disruptive element. In 1931, the exceptional case was complemented by the world’s first self-winding mechanism. Such a mechanism presented splendid accuracy, higher than ever before, thanks to the ingenious Perpetual rotor system. Since then, models from the Oyster Perpetual line have become the most popular products from the label.

The Perpetual rotor was enhanced in 1935 with a new balance wheel called the “Super Balance.” Two years later, the Swiss watchmaker released its first chronograph with the Valjoux mechanism. Throughout World War II, Oyster Perpetuals were a popular symbol of success and perfection among British pilots in the Royal Air Force.

Takeaway

Rolex developed its stringent tests for each machine that was intended to be used in its timepieces and only the most accurate and dependable products were finished with the Rolex signature. Since then, the brand’s watches have been recognized as a guarantee of high quality. All Rolex fans understand that the name Oyster Perpetual denotes exceptional quality and a long history. In 1926, the Oyster case was proudly introduced as the first water and dust-resistant time-telling device. The term Perpetual refers to the self-winding mechanism, which has long been associated with the brand’s efficiency.
