10 Best Free Certifications for Digital Marketers

Free Certifications for Digital Marketers

You want proof of skill that costs nothing and still means something to a hiring manager. That is harder than it sounds. Many lists of free certifications for digital marketers still name programs that moved platforms, closed, or now charge for the exam. Others call a free course a certification when the badge behind it costs $99.

Short answer: Google Ads, Google Analytics, HubSpot Academy, and Semrush Academy carry the most weight right now, and all four are free from the first lesson to the final certificate.

Every entry below says who issues it, what it tests, how long it lasts, and who should skip it.

How This List Was Judged

Three tests. The exam itself must be free, not only the lessons. The credential must be issued by the company that owns the platform. And the program had to be live and taking sign-ups when this was checked in September 2026.

One program broke the first rule and still made the list, because so many readers ask about it. It is marked clearly.

The 10 Best Free Certifications for Digital Marketers

1. Google Ads Certifications (Google Skillshop)

This is the credential employers name most often in job ads, and it costs nothing. Google runs it through Skillshop, its own training portal. Sign in with any Google account.

There is no single Google Ads certification. There are separate exams for Search, Display, Video, Shopping, Measurement, and Apps, plus newer exams built around AI-driven campaign types. Most exams run about 50 questions in 75 minutes and need 80% to pass. The Apps exam passes at 70%. Fail one and you can retake it after 24 hours.

Start with Search. It covers the ideas the other exams build on, and it is the one recruiters recognize.

Two honest warnings. The exams test Google’s preferred way of running an account, not how to protect a client’s budget. And every certificate expires after 12 months, so this becomes an annual chore. Any site charging you for a “Google Ads certificate” is selling something Google gives away.

2. HubSpot Academy

HubSpot Academy has more than 60 free certifications, all genuinely free, with no card and no trial period. You only need a free HubSpot account.

The most useful one for general marketing work is content marketing. It covers strategy, buyer personas, and editorial planning in a way that transfers to any tool. Inbound marketing is the second pick, mostly for name recognition. SEO, Email Marketing, and Social Media Marketing is solid but thinner.

Hubspot Academy Free Certifications

Most certifications take four to eight hours of lessons plus an exam you must finish in one sitting. Certificates expire after one or two years depending on the program, and HubSpot emails you before that happens.

The trap is badge collecting. Software-specific certifications only help if the employer runs HubSpot. Three relevant certificates plus real work beats ten badges.

3. Google Analytics Certification (Skillshop)

Free, from the same platform as the Google Ads exams, and valid for 12 months. It covers GA4 setup, reporting, and measurement basics.

Take it right after the search exam. Paid ads and measurement get asked about together in interviews, and a marketer who cannot read a report is a marketer who cannot prove results.

Passing the exam is not the same as being able to build a clean reporting setup. Create a property for a real site, even a small blog, and configure conversions yourself before you claim the skill.

4. Semrush Academy

The strongest free option for SEO specialists. Courses and exams are free with a free Semrush account, and no paid subscription is required to get certified.

Course exams are short, usually 10 to 15 questions, and you get three attempts. Fail all three and you wait a month. Each certificate is valid for one year from the date you pass.

Technical SEO is the hardest free SEO exam on this list, which is exactly why it is worth having. Semrush has also added AI search courses, which is the topic most agency clients are asking about in 2026.

One practical catch: the hands-on exercises assume you can open the tools. A free account gives limited access, so plan around that or use a trial while you study.

5. Fundamentals of Digital Marketing (Grow with Google)

The old Google Digital Garage course moved. It now lives on Skillshop under Grow with Google, and the rebuilt version went live in January 2025 with 17 modules covering strategy, content, search, social, email, video, and AI tools. Budget around 40 hours.

Read this part carefully, because most articles get it wrong. You finish this course and receive an award for completion. That is not the same as the proctored Google Ads exams above. It shows effort, not tested skill.

For someone with zero background, it is still the cleanest starting point available. For anyone already working, skip it and go straight to the Ads and Analytics exams.

6. LinkedIn Marketing Labs

Four free certifications: Content and Creative Design, Advertising Fundamentals, Marketing Measurement and Marketing Strategy. Each exam is 60 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, with three attempts, and free practice tests in the learning path.

LinkedIn Marketing Academy Certifications

The best detail here is the shelf life. These certificates last two years, not one, so the renewal load is lighter than Google’s.

Take these if you sell to businesses, work in SaaS, or handle lead generation. If your clients are local shops or e-commerce brands, your hours are better spent elsewhere.

7. Microsoft Advertising Learning Lab

Free training and free exams for Search, Display and Video, and Retail, which used to be called Shopping. You need 80% to pass, and each pass issues a Credly badge you can add to LinkedIn. Clear all of them and Microsoft upgrades you to Certified Expert.

Fewer marketers hold this, which is the point. Agencies that can run search campaigns outside Google have an easier pitch, and Microsoft’s ad inventory reaches an audience Google-only shops ignore.

8. Amazon Ads Academy

Free account, free certifications. Start with Introduction to Amazon Ads, then move to Sponsored Ads, which covers Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands, targeting, and bid strategy. Each track runs roughly three to five hours.

Amazon Ads Academy Certifications

Assessments must be done in one session, and you can retake after 24 hours if you miss the mark. Certificates carry a printed expiry date, so check yours rather than assuming a fixed period.

Only worth your time if you work with e-commerce sellers. For everyone else, it is a specialist detour.

9. Meta Blueprint (free to learn, paid to certify)

This one fails the free test, and it needs saying plainly. Meta Blueprint courses on Facebook and Instagram advertising are free, and you can earn completion badges at no cost. The official credential is separate. The Meta Certified Digital Marketing Associate exam voucher is listed at $99 in the US through Pearson VUE; professional-level exams run higher, and renewal means paying again.

So use Blueprint as free training, which it does well, and treat the certificate as an optional purchase. If a job ad demands Meta certification, pay. If not, spend the money on ad credit and run a real campaign instead.

10. Pinterest Academy

Pinterest Academy Certification Courses

Small, free, and narrow. Short courses earn skills badges, and there is a media buyer certification exam on top. Worth an afternoon if you handle home, food, beauty, or ecommerce accounts. Otherwise, leave it.

What Actually Happens When a Certificate Meets a Client

Our SEO, SEM, social, and content marketing teams work on client accounts every week through our digital services, and the pattern is consistent: a certificate opens the conversation, and a screenshot closes it.

Prospects rarely ask which exams a specialist has passed. They ask what changed last quarter and what number moved. A marketer with two certificates and one documented account fix gets hired ahead of someone with eight badges and no examples.

That matters most when you are working for yourself. If the goal is client work rather than a salary, the credential is the smallest part of the job, and the guide on how to become a digital marketing consultant covers the rest of it. Picking a lane early helps too, which is why these agency niches are worth reading before you sign up for six exams at once.

Mistakes that waste months

  • Taking ten certifications instead of two, then having nothing to show for either.
  • Letting a certificate expire and leaving it on LinkedIn anyway. Recruiters check.
  • Studying the Google Ads exams without ever opening an ad account.
  • Paying a third-party site for “certification answers.” It teaches nothing and the exams change.
  • Choosing exams by brand name instead of by the clients you actually want.

Final Thoughts

Pick two free certifications for digital marketers, not ten. For most people that means Google Ads Search plus Google Analytics. If your work is search and content, swap the second one for Semrush Technical SEO. If you sell to businesses, swap it for LinkedIn Marketing Strategy.

Then do the part nobody certifies. Run a small campaign with your own money, fix something measurable on a real site, and write down what happened. That one page of evidence will carry more weight than the badges above, and it stays valid forever. Anyone planning to turn this into paid work should read how to start a digital marketing consultancy from scratch next.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Can I keep an expired certification on my resume?

List it with the year you earned it and move on. Do not imply it is current. If the platform still runs the exam, recertifying usually takes far less time than the first attempt, because you already know the format. Expired badges left on a LinkedIn profile are a small but real credibility problem in agency hiring.

2. Is there a free certification for AI search and answer engines yet?

Not as a standalone credential from Google, Meta, or Microsoft as of September 2026. Semrush Academy is the closest, with free courses on AI search visibility that sit alongside its certified SEO tracks. For now, a certificate in traditional SEO plus documented work on AI visibility is a stronger signal than waiting for a badge that may not arrive.

3. How long before a certificate stops helping?

About as long as it stays valid. These exams are marketing for the platforms that run them, so the content follows product updates closely. A three-year-old certificate in a platform that has rebuilt its interface twice tells an employer very little.
