I ranked My Sassy Girl above everything else in one of my weekly movie recaps. That same week, I watched A Cure for Wellness, Survival Family, and the Hungarian drama The Ambassador to Bern. My viewing habits are fairly hard to fit into one category.

So, when I looked through the movies coming out in September 2026 on streaming platforms, I wanted more than a list of big releases. I wanted a few different options for the nights when a romance feels right or when I would rather sit through something unsettling.

Below is my September watchlist, grouped by genre. It covers streaming originals and films arriving after their theater runs. These are previews, not reviews of films I haven’t seen.

The Runner follows a lawyer trying to save her kidnapped son. Prime Video’s release announcement gives September 2 as its streaming date.

My pick here is Mayday. Ryan Reynolds plays a Navy pilot stranded in Soviet territory, while Kenneth Branagh plays the former KGB agent he must trust. I’m curious about how those two actors work together. Apple’s official page confirms its September 4 release.

Fuze brings a bank robbery into a London bomb evacuation, according to the film coverage and CinemaBlend’s streaming calendar. Guy Ritchie’s In the Grey puts Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal in a dangerous money-recovery job. Tom’s Guide lists its Starz arrival for September 12.

Horror Movies I’m Keeping an Eye On

A Cure for Wellness was part of my weekly movie recap, where I wrote about its disturbing atmosphere. That is usually what draws me toward psychological horror: the feeling that something is wrong before the film shows me why.

TechRadar’s September horror guide reports the Shudder dates, Heretic, and Backrooms. CinemaBlend lists Scary Movie for September 3.

Parasomnia centers on a woman troubled by night terrors. Bloody Tennis takes its horror to a tennis academy. Both interest me, though I would check Shudder’s local listing before planning an evening around either date.

Backrooms is the one I’m most curious about. Its maze of empty spaces sounds suited to the kind of slow unease I enjoy. Heretic, with Hugh Grant trapping two missionaries in a frightening conversation about faith, offers a more contained setup. Its September date marks an arrival on Hulu, not its first streaming release.

Romance and Comedy for a Quieter Evening

My fondness for My Sassy Girl makes it difficult to dismiss a romance just because its setup sounds familiar. What matters to me is whether I believe the people once they start talking.

Tyler Perry returns to his marriage comedy-drama series on September 9, as reported by PEOPLE. Call My Agent! The movie reunites the French series’ cast; Vogue confirms the September 10 Netflix date.

The two Prime Video romances are listed in Tom’s Guide’s monthly schedule. You+Me adds secrets and threats to a student romance. The Love Hypothesis pairs a Ph.D. student with a professor in a pretend relationship.

I would start with The Love Hypothesis. I’m hoping the relationship feels convincing beyond the initial joke.

Science Fiction and Family Movies

Watching Survival Family gave me a family story built around the sudden loss of electricity. I liked having that alongside heavier films in my weekly viewing. Our list of post-apocalyptic movies offers more choices for readers who enjoy stories about life after familiar systems fail.

September’s larger franchise arrivals take a different route.

These dates appear in CinemaBlend’s release calendar. Decider also reports the September 23 Disney+ arrival for Toy Story 5.

Of these, Toy Story 5 interests me most. Its toys face competition from technology for a child’s attention. That gives the film a familiar problem to work with, and I hope it finds room for the characters within it.

Two Tubi Movies Beyond the Subscription Services

Tom’s Guide’s Tubi schedule lists both originals. The Delivery Girl follows a delivery worker’s dangerous obsession. Get Back Up follows a former boxer training her younger sister after her own career ended.

I’m leaning toward Get Back Up. My Persian cinema journey includes films such as Children of Heaven and Life and a Day, which drew me toward family stories and everyday pressures. That doesn’t tell me whether this boxing film will work, but it explains why its story caught my attention.

What I’ll Watch First

Among the movies coming out in September 2026, my starting list is Mayday, The Love Hypothesis, Backrooms, and Get Back Up. That leaves me room to choose by mood instead of treating the month like homework.
