The death toll from Friday’s explosion in a mosque in Bangladesh’s Narayanganj reached 21 on Saturday, reports bdnews24.com.
Three more people were killed in the explosion at Baitus Salat Jame mosque in Narayanganj, just outside Dhaka, Saturday night, local media reported.
The blast took place at the two-story building at about 8:30pm on Friday, leaving dozens of people burn injured. Several blasts shook the mosque and a fire broke out, according to a report of The New York Times.
Within moments, panic spread among about 50 people inside the mosque. They tried to get out in a hurry. Fire fighters rescued 37 of burn injured and admitted them to Sheikh Hasina Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
At least one young child named Jewel died on the spot. Then others die at night and in the morning.
Fire officials suspected that the incident occurred due to leak in a gas pipeline, reports The Daily Star.
The authorities handed over bodies of 18 people killed in the blast to their relatives without an autopsy on Saturday. Narayanganj Sadar Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Nahida Barik and Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) have confirmed this.
Three investigation committees have been formed in this incident.
Police filed a case with Fatullah Police Station for negligence over the incident.
