Mitchell Starc Pulls Out of Australia’s ICC Champions Trophy Squad

Australia’s preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy have taken a major hit, with veteran fast bowler Mitchell Starc withdrawing from the tournament due to personal reasons. Cricket Australia confirmed Starc’s decision, stating that his reasons would remain private.

Starc, one of Australia’s most experienced and lethal pacers, will also be absent from the two-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, which begins on Wednesday in Colombo. His absence leaves a significant gap in the Australian bowling attack, which was already struggling with multiple injury concerns.

Cricket Australia’s Response

Chair of selectors George Bailey expressed full support for Starc’s decision, acknowledging the pacer’s commitment to the national team over the years.

While the loss of Starc is significant, Australia’s depth in fast bowling has been tested repeatedly, and this will be another instance where new or fringe players must rise to the challenge.

Steve Smith Named Stand-in Captain

With Pat Cummins also unavailable due to an ankle injury, Steve Smith has been named the captain for the tournament. Smith previously led Australia to a 2-0 Test series win against Sri Lanka in Galle earlier this year when Cummins was on personal leave.

Australia’s squad has already suffered multiple setbacks, with Mitchell Marsh (back injury), Josh Hazlewood (side strain), and Marcus Stoinis (retirement) all ruled out of the competition. With such a long list of absentees, Australia will be heavily reliant on their bench strength to navigate through the tournament successfully.

Australia’s First Match Against England

Australia will begin their Champions Trophy campaign on February 22 against England in Lahore. This high-stakes clash is expected to set the tone for their tournament run. The team will then face South Africa and Afghanistan in their group-stage fixtures.

With Starc and Cummins missing, Australia’s bowling attack is likely to be led by seasoned campaigners like Sean Abbott, Nathan Ellis, and Spencer Johnson, who have been included as replacements.

India Also Faces Major Setback as Jasprit Bumrah is Ruled Out

India Also Faces Major Setback as Jasprit Bumrah is Ruled Out

Australia is not the only team struggling with injuries ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy. India has also suffered a huge setback with their lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah ruled out due to a lower-back injury.

Bumrah sustained back spasms during the final Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) last month and has not recovered in time for the marquee tournament. His injury also forced him to miss India’s five-match T20I series against England.

The absence of Bumrah is a serious blow for India’s fast-bowling unit, given his reputation as one of the most dominant bowlers in world cricket. The 31-year-old was in outstanding form during the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy, picking up 32 wickets at a phenomenal average of 13.06 across five Tests.

India Names Replacement for Bumrah

With Bumrah ruled out, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named Harshit Rana as his replacement. The young pacer has played only two ODIs so far, both against England earlier this month, picking up four wickets. While he lacks international experience, the selectors believe he has the potential to fill in for Bumrah in the short term.

In addition to Rana’s inclusion, Varun Chakaravarthy has also been brought into the squad, replacing batter Yashasvi Jaiswal. This move suggests that India is looking to strengthen their spin department, possibly to exploit conditions in Pakistan and the UAE.

India’s Champions Trophy Schedule

India will open their campaign on February 20 against Bangladesh in Dubai, followed by highly anticipated clashes against Pakistan and New Zealand in the group stage.

India’s fast-bowling unit will now rely heavily on the likes of Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, and Harshit Rana, along with experienced all-rounders like Hardik Pandya, to maintain their balance in the tournament.

Impact of Starc and Bumrah’s Absence on the Tournament

The withdrawals of Mitchell Starc and Jasprit Bumrah are major blows for Australia and India, respectively, as both are considered among the best fast bowlers in the world. Their absence will change the dynamics of the tournament, possibly giving other teams an edge.

With Australia missing three of their key pacers (Starc, Cummins, and Hazlewood) and India losing their most lethal fast bowler, both teams will be forced to rethink their strategies and rely on emerging talents.

The ICC Champions Trophy remains one of the most exciting international tournaments, and despite the absence of key players, it promises to deliver high-octane cricket action. Fans will be eagerly watching how Australia and India adapt to these setbacks as they aim for success in Pakistan and the UAE.

Upcoming Fixtures in ICC Champions Trophy 2025

  • India vs New Zealand—February 28 (Abu Dhabi)

With both teams looking to make a mark in the tournament despite their setbacks, it remains to be seen which players step up in the absence of these star pacers.
