Usha Vance Becomes First Indian-American Second Lady in U.S. History

Usha Vance

Usha Vance, an accomplished lawyer and the wife of J.D. Vance, has made history as the first Indian-American and Hindu to serve as the Second Lady of the United States. Her husband, J.D. Vance, was sworn in as the 50th Vice President of the United States on January 20, 2025, during a ceremony steeped in tradition and symbolism. The occasion marked a significant milestone in American history, reflecting the growing diversity in the nation’s political leadership.

The Inauguration Ceremony

The swearing-in ceremony was held at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, an iconic location in Washington, D.C. The decision to hold the event indoors came in response to severe winter weather that gripped the capital. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, a mentor to Usha Vance during her legal career, administered the oath of office to Vice President J.D. Vance.

Usha Vance stood proudly beside her husband, holding the Bible in one hand and their youngest child, Mirabel Rose, in the other. As J.D. Vance placed his left hand on the Bible and raised his right hand, he repeated the oath of office, officially assuming his role as Vice President. Their two older children, Ewan Blaine, 7, and Vivek, 4, also joined the ceremony. Dressed in formal suits, the boys stood alongside their parents, embodying the sense of pride and unity that defined the moment. Usha, radiant in a pink outfit, beamed with joy as she watched her husband take on this monumental responsibility.

The event was attended by a host of dignitaries, including President Donald Trump, who took the presidential oath of office following Vice President Vance’s swearing-in. In a light-hearted remark during his address, President Trump quipped that Usha Vance might have been a better choice for Vice President, praising her intelligence and poise.

Usha Vance’s Journey and Background

Usha Vance’s Journey and Background

Born Usha Bala Chilukuri in 1986 in San Diego, California, Usha is the daughter of Telugu Indian immigrants. Her father, Radhakrishna “Krish” Chilukuri, is an aerospace engineer, while her mother, Lakshmi Chilukuri, serves as the provost at the University of California, San Diego. Usha’s upbringing was steeped in the values of education, hard work, and cultural pride, shaping her into the accomplished individual she is today.

Usha attended Yale University, where she graduated summa cum laude with a degree in history. She went on to earn her Juris Doctor from Yale Law School, a prestigious institution where she met J.D. Vance. The two shared a strong bond, forged by their mutual determination and resilience. J.D. Vance, who overcame a challenging upbringing in a broken family, often credits Usha as his “spirit guide.” In his memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, he wrote about how her presence helped him navigate the unfamiliar world of the Ivy League.

The couple married in 2014 and have since built a life centered on family, faith, and public service. They have three children: Ewan Blaine, Vivek, and Mirabel Rose. Usha’s family, including her parents and J.D. Vance’s mother, Beverly Aikins, who has overcome her struggles with addiction, were present to witness the historic moment.

A Distinguished Legal Career

Usha Vance’s professional achievements are a testament to her dedication and intellect. After graduating from Yale Law School, she clerked for several prominent judges, including Judge Amul Thapar of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky, Justice Brett Kavanaugh on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, and Chief Justice John Roberts of the U.S. Supreme Court. These prestigious roles underscored her legal acumen and established her as a rising star in the legal profession.

Usha later joined the law firm Munger, Tolles & Olson, where she specialized in complex civil litigation. Her work earned her widespread recognition, but she chose to step back from her legal career in 2024 to support her husband’s vice-presidential campaign and focus on her family.

J.D. Vance’s Rise to Political Prominence

J.D. Vance’s journey from a troubled childhood in Middleton, Ohio, to the vice presidency is a story of perseverance and transformation. Raised by his grandmother in the face of poverty and his mother’s struggles with addiction, Vance sought refuge in education and the military. His service in the Marine Corps provided him with discipline and a sense of purpose, leading to his acceptance into Yale Law School.

After graduating, Vance initially pursued a career in law before transitioning to venture capitalism. In 2022, he entered politics, winning a seat in the U.S. Senate. His candidacy for vice president in the 2024 election further cemented his reputation as a leader capable of bridging divides and addressing the challenges facing America.

Cultural Significance and Legacy

As the first Indian-American and Hindu to hold the role of Second Lady, Usha Vance’s position represents a significant milestone in American history. Her story reflects the evolving landscape of U.S. politics, where individuals from diverse backgrounds contribute to shaping the nation’s future. Usha’s journey is an inspiration to many, symbolizing the possibilities that arise from dedication, resilience, and embracing one’s identity.

Her influence extends beyond her ceremonial role. As a mother, lawyer, and advocate, Usha Vance brings a unique perspective to the position, one that is informed by her heritage, professional experience, and personal values. Together with Vice President J.D. Vance, she embodies the spirit of a modern, inclusive America.
