Afghanistan Stuns New Zealand in T20 World Cup Upset

afghanistan beats new zealand in t20 world cup

Afghanistan delivered a remarkable performance to upset New Zealand by 84 runs, securing the top spot in Group C at the T20 World Cup.

The match, held at the Guyana National Stadium, saw Afghanistan set a challenging target of 160 runs.

In response, New Zealand was bowled out for just 75 runs in 15.2 overs, marking their first-ever defeat to Afghanistan in T20 Internationals.

Gurbaz Shines with the Bat

Afghanistan’s innings was anchored by opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who scored a brilliant 80 off 56 balls, including five sixes. He formed a formidable opening partnership with Ibrahim Zadran, who contributed 44 runs.

Together, they posted a 103-run stand for the first wicket, laying a strong foundation for Afghanistan to reach a total of 159 for six.

Bowling Masterclass by Farooqi and Rashid Khan

Left-arm seamer Fazalhaq Farooqi continued his impressive form from the opening match against Uganda, where he took five wickets.

Against New Zealand, Farooqi claimed four wickets, dismantling their top order with precision. His figures of 4-17 were instrumental in restricting New Zealand to a paltry total.

Captain and leg-spinner Rashid Khan also played a crucial role, matching Farooqi’s haul with his own four-wicket performance.

Rashid’s spell included the crucial wicket of New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, taken with the first ball of his spell, which effectively ended New Zealand’s resistance.

New Zealand’s Struggles

New Zealand’s performance was marked by rustiness and an inability to cope with Afghanistan’s bowling attack.

The Black Caps’ innings never gained momentum, with wickets falling at regular intervals. Captain Kane Williamson acknowledged the team’s shortcomings, stating, “Congrats to Afghanistan, they simply outplayed us in all facets. The skills they had made it difficult for us.”

Gurbaz’s Delight and Rashid’s Perspective

Rahmanullah Gurbaz was awarded the “Man of the Match” for his outstanding batting performance. Reflecting on the victory, he said, “We’ve been waiting for this moment for about three years.

We have the trust and belief that we can beat any team in this competition on this type of surface.”

Rashid Khan expressed pride in his team’s performance, highlighting the collective effort that led to the historic win. “It is one of the greatest performances for us in T20s against a big team like New Zealand.

And it was a great team effort, from the opening stand between Gurbaz and Ibrahim to the bowlers and the effort in the field from everyone.”

Future Challenges

New Zealand faces a tough road ahead, starting with a match against co-hosts West Indies in Trinidad next Wednesday.

Williamson emphasized the need for the team to move past the defeat and focus on upcoming matches quickly. “This just wasn’t good enough in terms of starting a tournament. It’s very frustrating. We have to move on quickly from this because the matches now come thick and fast for us.”

On the other hand, Afghanistan will play against Papua New Guinea at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy on Friday. Rashid Khan cautioned against complacency, stating, “We have to keep improving and not get carried away with this win. The tournament is long, and we have to be consistent.”

Afghanistan’s victory over New Zealand is a testament to their growing prowess in T20 cricket.

With stellar performances from Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Fazalhaq Farooqi, and Rashid Khan, they have sent a strong message to the other teams in the tournament.

As Afghanistan looks ahead to their next match, they will aim to maintain their momentum and continue their quest for the T20 World Cup title.
