Pokemon Go Update: New Changes to Avatars, Map, Photos & More

Pokémon GO

Major updates for Pokemon Go have been revealed, and they will soon be available to all users.

Niantic debuted a brief teaser video for the Rediscover Go campaign last week, and today they unveiled a longer, more detailed film. The new clip offers players a better look at the changes that will be made to the game’s presentation and avatars.

Although the exact date of these changes’ implementation is unknown, Niantic reports that they have already begun to roll them out internationally, so it should not be too long before all fans see the improvements.

Below is the trailer for the latest Rediscover Go campaign.

What Changes Can Players Expect in Pokemon Go?

Avatars are starting to appear a little more detailed than they did, but Niantic is hinting at improvements to the style shop in the game, saying that it would let users “express yourself with more customization options than ever before.” Changes to the game’s map will also make it more realistic, allowing players to see cities, mountains, beaches, and forests.

Niantic said that players can anticipate this in battle and encounter screens in addition to the overworld. Not to mention, the photo function in the game is being modified to enable users to include up to three Pokemon in a single picture. Although the specifics of how that would operate are unknown, it may be quite enjoyable to have Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle all in one shot!

Rediscovering Pokemon Go

The campaign’s name suggests that its goal is to capture some of the excitement that accompanied Pokemon Go on its initial release in the summer of 2016. As incredible as it may seem, almost eight years have passed since the game’s release, and Pokemon Go is still quite popular worldwide.

Niantic made a lot of adjustments when the coronavirus pandemic initially started to happen in order to keep players interested in the game even when they were unable to play locally. Since Niantic wants players to play and engage in the real world, several of those modifications have been dialed back or made more restrictive during the past two years.

In the Rediscover Go clip, players can be seen gathering to play the game virtually anywhere—on beaches, in forests, and other locations. It remains to be seen if these visual tweaks to the game will bring back former gamers or encourage them to play it with friends, as Niantic intends.

On the surface, though, it appears to be a more manageable option than altering things like the cost of tickets for Remote Raids or the distance that PokeStops spin!
