His early years were characterized by a lot of moving around. This was because he lived in foster care for some time. Living in different homes taught him to adapt to new situations quickly.

Tyrus attended Quartz Hill High School in Los Angeles County, California, before pursuing higher education at Antelope Valley College in Lancaster in 1992. Later, he studied to become a teacher at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where he also played college football for the Lopers.

In the interview, Tyrus said that his young parents lacked the experience to raise a child effectively. As Tyrus grew up, he had a hard time with who he was. He wished he could change his skin color. He thought this would let him be back with his family. Later, Tyrus and his brother saw their mom again. But Tyrus left home when he was 15 years old.
