Britain said on Wednesday that it was taking preparation to send more portable missile systems to Ukraine to assist Ukrainian forces in destroying Russian tanks and aircraft, but disputed that the battle was increasing.
The UK has delivered 3,615 Next Generation Light Anti-tank Weapons (NLAWs) so far, according to Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, and “continues to supply more.”
“A minor batch of anti-tank Javelin missiles will be delivered shortly as well,” he informed parliament, AFP reports.
“In response to Ukrainian requests,” Wallace said, “the administration has decided to investigate the donation of Starstreak high-velocity man-portable anti-air missiles.”
The British Starstreak missiles, like the NLAWs, are a transportable system that may be fired by troops in the field and can target helicopters and planes.
“We feel that this system will fall within the scope of defensive weaponry,” the minister said, adding that it will allow the Ukrainian military to effectively defend the skies.
“I want to reassure the House (of Commons) that whatever we do is constrained by our decisions to supply defensive systems and is calibrated to avoid reaching a strategic level.”
According to Wallace, Britain will increase its supplies of rations, medical equipment, and other “non-lethal” military aid to Ukraine. Before Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, Britain dispatched a contingent of military trainers to teach Ukrainian forces how to use anti-tank weapons. It has dispatched 800 troops to Estonia to reinforce NATO’s eastern border, with another 1,000 on standby in case the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine’s neighbors worsens.
However, Britain, like other NATO partners, has rejected Ukraine’s calls for a no-fly zone, scared of a full-scale confrontation with nuclear-armed Russia.
