The White House said on Tuesday that Russia’s incursion into East Ukraine is the “beginning of an invasion”, and that strong measures against Russia will be announced soon.
“We believe this is the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest assault into Ukraine,” deputy national security adviser Jonathan Finer told CNN. Finer continued, “An invasion is an invasion, and that is exactly what is happening.”
The White House, which was first hesitant to use the term ‘invasion,’ has now begun to do so in light of the reality on the ground, according to administration sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity to the Associated Press on Tuesday.
Moscow continues to deny that Ukraine has been invaded. Since the start of the crisis between Russia and Ukraine, the US has warned that a full-scale Russian invasion would result in crippling economic penalties. President Joe Biden is scheduled to speak to the nation on the deteriorating crisis in Ukraine in a few hours, and he will most likely include sanctions.
Biden’s speech comes after he signed an executive order barring US investment, trade, and financing in separatist-controlled areas of eastern Ukraine.
The European Union has announced that sanctions will be imposed against Russia. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom has begun implementing economic sanctions on Russia, with fines levied against five Russian banks and three billionaires.
Another blow for Russia has been Germany’s decision to postpone construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which was supposed to transport Russian natural gas to Europe. The United States has endorsed Berlin’s decision.
“If Russia invades Ukraine, we will act with Germany to prevent Nord Stream 2 from moving forward,” Biden said. Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, tweeted earlier on Tuesday, “We will be following up with our measures today.”
The United States has been a key player in the current issue, blaming Russia on numerous occasions in order to avoid a conflict that is in no one’s best interests.
According to experts, the US approach to the Ukraine situation should also be examined through the lens of America’s propensity of intervening in global affairs.
