A U.N. monitoring mission stated on Saturday that at least 351 people have been confirmed killed in Ukraine since Russian troops invaded on February 24, with another 707 injured, although the exact figures are likely “considerably higher”, reports Reuters.
According to monitors from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the majority of civilian casualties were caused by explosive weapons with a wide impact area, such as shelling from heavy artillery and multi-launch rocket systems, as well as missile and air strikes.
“OHCHR believes the true statistics are far higher, particularly in Government-controlled areas and in recent days,” it stated, “since information from some sites where intense battles have been taking place has been delayed and many reports are still awaiting confirmation.”
Hundreds of civilian casualties alleged in the town of Volnovakha – where Russian forces were attempting to build a safe evacuation path – had yet to be verified, according to the mission.
