OpenAI Deal Sparks Controversy: Elon Musk Threatens iPhone Ban at His Companies

Brazil Judge Opens Inquiry Elon Musk

In a bold and controversial move, Elon Musk has threatened to ban Apple iPhones from all of his companies. This announcement came after Apple revealed its new partnership with OpenAI during its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024.

Musk, who is the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, expressed deep concerns over this collaboration, calling it a significant security risk.

Social Media Outburst

Musk took to his social media platform, X, to voice his opposition. In a series of posts, he criticized Apple and OpenAI’s partnership, questioning whether Apple can ensure the security and privacy of user data once it’s handed over to OpenAI.

“Apple has no clue what’s actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI. They’re selling you down the river,” Musk claimed.

Apple’s Announcement at WWDC

Earlier in the day, Apple announced its integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its latest iPhones, along with other operating systems, including iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia.

Apple emphasized that users would control when ChatGPT is used and must give permission before any data is shared. This integration aims to enhance Siri by allowing it to leverage ChatGPT’s extensive knowledge base.

Musk’s Ultimatum

“If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my company. That is an unacceptable security violation,” Musk stated firmly.

This ultimatum raises questions about the practicality and enforceability of such a ban, as well as the potential impact on his company’s operations.

Background of the Feud

Musk’s issues with Apple date back to last year when Apple stopped advertising on X after Musk endorsed an antisemitic conspiracy theory. This move by Apple led to further tensions between Musk and Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Additionally, Musk has had a longstanding feud with OpenAI, a company he co-founded and later left. He has publicly criticized its direction and leadership, particularly its CEO, Sam Altman.

Details of the Partnership

Apple’s partnership with OpenAI includes integrating ChatGPT-powered features into Siri and other system-wide applications. According to Apple, this integration will enhance user experience by providing more accurate and comprehensive responses.

The company assured users that privacy protections are built in, with device IP addresses kept private and no storage of requests by OpenAI.

Musk’s Security Concerns

Musk’s primary concern revolves around the potential misuse of user data by OpenAI. He argued that Apple lacks the capability to monitor and control how OpenAI handles the data.

“It’s patently absurd that Apple isn’t smart enough to make their own AI, yet is somehow capable of ensuring that OpenAI will protect your security & privacy!” Musk wrote.

Potential Implications

If Musk follows through with his threat, it could have significant implications for his companies, including Tesla and SpaceX.

Employees and visitors would need to store their Apple devices in Faraday cages, which block electromagnetic transmissions, effectively disabling the devices on company premises. This drastic measure would not only inconvenience employees but also potentially hinder productivity and communication.

Ongoing Rivalries

Musk’s rivalry with OpenAI has intensified since he left the company. He recently launched his own AI company, xAI, and a ChatGPT competitor called Grok.

His criticism of OpenAI is rooted in his belief that the company has strayed from its original mission to develop AI for the benefit of humanity broadly.

Musk has also clashed with Tim Cook and Apple over various issues, although there were attempts to reconcile when Cook invited Musk for a tour of Apple’s headquarters in 2022.

Elon Musk’s threat to ban Apple iPhones from his companies over the Apple-OpenAI deal underscores his ongoing conflicts with both entities.

As Apple moves forward with its AI integration plans, it remains to be seen how Musk’s companies will adapt and whether his threats will materialize. The situation highlights the complexities and tensions at the intersection of technology, privacy, and corporate rivalry.
