Last year, more than 430,000 permanent residents moved to Canada. This was a new record for the country.
In a news release on Tuesday, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said that the federal government has reached its goal of letting in 431,645 new permanent residents by the end of 2022. Ottawa broke the record it had set in 2021 when more than 401,000 new permanent residents came to Canada.

Statistics Canada says that in 1913, more than 400,000 people moved to Canada, which was the previous record.
“Today is a momentous occasion for Canada, as it sets a new record for the most immigrants in a single year. Fraser said in the news release that this shows how strong and tough our country and people are.
“Newcomers are extremely important because they fill jobs when there are not enough people to do them, they contribute fresh ideas and talents to our communities, and they improve our society as a whole. I’m excited to see what the future holds and look forward to another historic year in 2023 as we continue to welcome newcomers.

In 2022, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will process about 5.2 million applications for permanent residence, temporary residence, and citizenship. This is double the number of applications that will be processed in 2021, said the news release.
The release said that IRCC has added resources, embraced new technology, streamlined processing, and put more processes online.
It stated, “These changes are all significant enhancements to Canada’s immigration system that will position us well for the future.”

“As the Canadian government works to fix the severe labor market shortages we have right now and build a strong economy for the future, one thing is certain: immigration is a key part of the solution.”
The government says that almost all of the growth in Canada’s workforce is due to immigration. About 75% of the growth in Canada’s population is due to immigration, most of which is economic.
Canada’s government says that by 2036, immigrants will make up 30% of the country’s population, which is up from 20.7% in 2011.

Fraser said on November 1, 2022, that the government wants 500,000 people to move to Canada every year by 2025. Ottawa plans for the number of immigrants to rise from 465,000 people in 2023 to 500,000 people in 2025, with a big focus on letting people in based on their work skills or experience.
In an interview with Global News at the end of the year, Housing Minister Ahmed Hussen said that Canada needs many skilled immigrants to help in the construction sector.
Industry experts have told Global News in the past that a wave of expected retirements will lead to a lot of job openings in the construction industry in the coming years.
“We know there are over a million jobs in Canada that are still open, so we need skilled immigrants to come in and help us fill those jobs and grow our economy,” he said. “Additionally, it is ironic that we require more trained immigrants to assist in the building trades and construction sector of our economy.
“We need those people to come in and help us build the homes that Canadians need.”
