Is Cristiano Ronaldo Retiring? Will He Play in FIFA World Cup 2026?

Ronaldo Net Worth

Morocco crushed Portugal’s hopes of lifting the FIFA World Cup 2022 trophy with Cristiano Ronaldo. The 37-year-old, who came on with his side losing by one goal in the quarterfinal game, struggled to make much of an impact when he entered the game in the second half. He was seen leaving the field while still crying, and a video of him crying quickly went viral on social media as the superstar’s fans watched in shock.

Several things have happened to the all-time best scorer in football this year, including the death of his newborn son, some conflict with the management of Manchester United, and becoming a backup option for Portugal’s matches in the round of 16 and quarterfinals.

Ronaldo club future and international goals are uncertain as a result of his recent departure from Manchester United.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s statement on his retirement plan

Ronaldo told British Journalist Piers Morgan last month: “I want to play two years more, three years more. So two or three years maximum. I want to finish at 40. I think 40, will be a good age…But I don’t know, I don’t know the future. Sometimes you plan one thing for your life and as I told many times, the life is dynamic. And you never know what’s going to happen.”

The 37-year-old stated that the Middle East event could be his final World Cup.

Ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022 tournament, he said: “It’s difficult to tell right now, it’s because, we, my mood is right now towards the World Cup. It’s probably my last World Cup, of course, my fifth World Cup.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen after the World Cup, but as I told you before, and I will say again, the fans will be always in my heart.”

“And I hope they’ve been in my side, even if I back, or if I’m not back, or if I stay or whatever. Nobody’s perfect. Episodes in the life we all have is part of being human beings, it’s part of me to be a human being and father as well. I always will commit mistakes.

“But I don’t know, it’s hard to tell right now what’s going to happen after the World Cup because my focus is for the World Cup, for the Portugal national team.”

Is Ronaldo retiring after Portugal’s defeat

Based on such remarks, the FIFA World Cup 2022 will undoubtedly be his last, and his days in a Portugal jersey are also numbered. He’ll be 41 by the time the World Cup comes around in 2026.

Ronaldo also told British broadcaster Morgan that if Portugal had won the tournament, he would have immediately resigned from international service.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s last few days have been a whirlwind, and while he is focused on the Portuguese national team, he has spoken about his current situation with Manchester United, so it is very possible that CR7 will not have a team at the end of the World Cup, though that may no longer matter, as he has opened the door to Cristiano Ronaldo retirement under certain conditions.

Is CR7 finished in Europe? Where will Ronaldo play next?

Ronaldo can now focus on picking his next club now that the World Cup is over. Prior to World Cup 2022 beginning, the legendary Real Madrid player burned his bridges at Manchester United and the two parted ways.

Although Ronaldo has played his whole professional career in Europe, there are rumors that he will soon move further abroad. While MLS always seems to be a desirable choice for stars just before Cristiano Ronald retirement, he is more likely to end up in the Middle East.

Ronaldo is reportedly considering a sizable offer from Al Nassr once more after rejecting a hefty offer from Saudi Arabia over the summer.

Is Ronaldo signing with Al Nassr?

By the beginning of 2023, after spending the holidays with his family, Ronaldo is anticipated to sign a contract with his new team.

At the beginning of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Al Nassr had already played eight league games, and they were anxious to hire Ronaldo as soon as possible. The Saudi Arabian team last won the league championship in 2018–19, when it placed third.

They are apparently willing to pay Ronaldo just under €100 million (£86.1 million/$105 million) as a signing-on fee, with his expected salary rumored to be over €200 million (£172 million/$211 million) per season, according to Marca. Ronaldo would be the highest-paid player in football history thanks to such a deal.

Ronaldo would remain in Saudi Arabia until the middle of 2025 if the two and a half year contract were to hold.

Superstar writes emotional note after Portugal elimination

“Winning a World Cup for Portugal was the biggest and most ambitious dream of my career. Fortunately, I won many titles of international dimension, including for Portugal, but putting the name of our country on the highest level in the world was my biggest dream. I fought for it. I fought hard for this dream. In the 5 presences that I scored in World Cups over 16 years, always alongside great players and supported by millions of Portuguese people, I gave my all. I left everything on the field. I never turned my face to the fight and I never gave up on that dream,” wrote the Portugal captain on social media.

“Unfortunately, yesterday the dream ended. I just want everyone to know that much has been said, much has been written, much has been speculated, but my dedication to Portugal has not changed for an instant. I was always one more person fighting for everyone’s goal and I would never turn my back on my teammates and my country,” the caption added.

“For now, there’s not much more to say. Thank you, Portugal. Thank you, Qatar. The dream was beautiful while it lasted… Now, it’s time to be a good advisor and allow each one to draw their own conclusions,” the 37-year-old signed off.
