Amazon MGM Spends $20M to Gain Creative Control

Amazon MGM Studios has secured full creative control of the iconic James Bond franchise for a cash payment of just $20 million, a stunning development revealed in a new UK tax filing from Eon Productions.

The February 2025 deal, which has just come to light, formally ends the 60-year creative reign of the Broccoli family, who have been the iron-clad guardians of 007 since Dr. No in 1962. This move resolves a long-simmering cold war between Eon’s producers, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, and the new corporate owners at Amazon, who acquired MGM for $8.5 billion in 2022.

The Amazon MGM James Bond creative control agreement hands the reins of the multi-billion-dollar franchise to the studio. In a clear sign of the new era, veteran producers Amy Pascal (Spider-Man: Homecoming) and David Heyman (Harry Potter, Barbie) have been tapped to produce the next installment, Bond 26.

Key Facts: The New 007 Deal

  • The Price: A UK earnings report filed by Eon Productions, cited by multiple trade publications on October 22-23, 2025, states a $20 million consideration for the sale of its “interest in the Bond franchise.”
  • The Date: The agreement was finalized on February 20, 2025, but only became public knowledge this week.
  • The Handover: Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, who held absolute creative authority, have ceded that control and will step back from their producer roles.
  • The New Team: Amy Pascal and David Heyman are the new producers for Bond 26. Denis Villeneuve (Dune) is attached to direct, with Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) writing the screenplay.
  • The Caveat: Industry analysts suggest the $20 million is merely the cash component of a more complex “joint venture” deal, which likely includes Amazon stock, profit-sharing, or other incentives, keeping the Broccoli family involved financially but not creatively.
  • The Context: The sale follows Amazon’s $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM in 2022 and widely reported creative clashes between Eon and Amazon executives throughout 2024.

A ‘License to Cede’: Eon Filing Confirms $20M Sale

For decades, the James Bond franchise operated under a unique power structure. MGM (and its previous partners like United Artists) handled financing and distribution, but Eon Productions, the family company founded by Albert R. “Cubby” Broccoli, held all creative power. This included the final say on scripts, directors, and, most crucially, the casting of James Bond himself.

When Amazon completed its $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM on March 17, 2022, it bought the studio’s 50% stake in the Bond catalog but did not acquire this sacred creative control. This set the stage for a power struggle.

That struggle appears to have ended on February 20, 2025.

A newly public earnings report filed by Eon Productions in the UK contains the bombshell detail. As first reported by outlets including Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, a note in the filing reads:

This “interest” is universally interpreted by industry insiders as the creative control Eon had guarded for generations. Amazon MGM Studios has not commented on the filing.

The Billion-Dollar Question: Why So Cheap?

The Billion-Dollar Question Why So Cheap

The $20 million figure has sent shockwaves through Hollywood. The sum is bafflingly low for one of the most valuable intellectual properties in cinema history.

Consider the following:

  1. Daniel Craig’s Salary: The actor was reportedly paid $25 million for his final appearance in 2021’s No Time to Die—more than the price Amazon paid for control of the entire franchise.
  2. Film Box Office: No Time to Die, the last film under Eon’s stewardship, grossed $774.2 million worldwide despite a pandemic-era release.
  3. Amazon’s Previous IP Buys: Amazon spent an estimated $250 million for the rights to make a ‘Lord of the Rings‘ television show, a deal that did not include the core film IP.

Industry analysts are unanimous: the $20 million is not the full story.

The deal is believed to be a complex joint venture. This cash payment may be the taxable, up-front portion of a deal that shifts the Broccoli family’s compensation into other forms, such as Amazon stock options or a significant, ongoing profit-participation in all future Bond-related content (films, TV shows, games).

Essentially, the Broccolis have traded creative control for a different, and potentially more passive, form of financial co-ownership.

This move may also have been prompted by Eon’s financial state during the franchise’s downtime. According to Screen Rant, Eon’s 2024 revenue was reported at just $16.3 million (down from $390 million in 2021, the year No Time to Die was released), signaling a financial reliance on the active production of Bond films.

From “F***ing Idiots” to a Final Handover

The sale is the climax of a bitter, behind-the-scenes battle. In late 2024, The Wall Street Journal reported on the deep animosity between Barbara Broccoli and Amazon’s streaming executives.

The conflict was one of art versus algorithm. Broccoli, who built the Daniel Craig era on “gut instinct,” was reportedly furious with Amazon’s “algorithm-centric” approach. According to a December 2024 report, the relationship was toxic:

Broccoli also reportedly cited her father’s core advice: “Don’t have temporary people make permanent decisions.”

The February 2025 deal suggests that just two months after these reports, Eon decided the fight was no longer worth having. Rather than wage a “forever war” against their new corporate partners, the Broccolis opted for a “harvest strategy”—selling the family business they had stewarded for 60 years.

The New Era: What Amazon’s Bond 26 Will Look Like

The future of James Bond is now in the hands of Amazon and its chosen producers, Amy Pascal and David Heyman. Both are industry titans with proven track records of managing massive, beloved IP.

  • Amy Pascal was instrumental in the Sony-Marvel deal that brought Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has produced the animated Spider-Verse saga.
  • David Heyman is the producer who secured the rights to Harry Potter and oversaw all eight films, in addition to producing hits like Paddington and Barbie.

This is a significant shift from a family-run “cottage industry” to a high-powered Hollywood producer-led model. The creative team being assembled—with Denis Villeneuve directing and Steven Knight writing—signals Amazon is aiming for a prestige, blockbuster-scale reboot.

This new team, under Amazon’s final authority, will now lead the most anticipated decision in cinema: the casting of the next James Bond. Production is expected to begin in 2027, following Villeneuve’s completion of Dune: Part Three, with a likely release in 2028.

For the first time since Sean Connery first ordered a martini, the creative future of 007 will not be decided by a Broccoli. Amazon, for just $20 million in cash, has finally secured its man.
