En Vogue’s Dawn Robinson Reveals She’s Homeless, Living in Her Car

Dawn Robinson, former member of the iconic 1990s R&B girl group En Vogue, recently revealed to her fans that she has been homeless and living in her car for the past three years. Robinson shared this deeply personal news in a heartfelt YouTube video on Tuesday, March 11.

Living in Her Car: A Personal Decision

In the candid video, Robinson, now 58, opened up about her current living situation. You guys, for the past three years, I have been living in my car,” she admitted with visible relief, saying, “I said it, oh my gosh, it’s out.

Robinson detailed how in 2020, she initially lived with her parents in Las Vegas but decided it was time to move on. Upon the advice of her former manager, she relocated to Los Angeles, initially staying with him. However, that arrangement soon fell through, forcing her to move into a hotel, where she stayed for eight months.

She explained that finding stable housing became difficult because her manager reportedly kept disapproving potential apartments. “Sometimes people want to trap you and keep you in a situation where you’re vulnerable and depending on them,” Robinson reflected. Eventually, she chose to leave this situation.

Embracing “Car Life”

Seeking independence, Robinson started researching “car life” and became inspired by others’ experiences online. She decided to embrace this unconventional lifestyle, relocating to Malibu, California, and has been living in her car ever since.

“I felt free,” Robinson said about her decision. I felt like I was on a camping trip. It just felt like it was the right thing to do.”

Not Seeking Sympathy

Robinson made it clear that she did not share her story to seek sympathy or pity. “It’s not ‘Woe is me,'” she emphasized. “I’m learning about who I am. I’m learning myself as a person, as a woman.

While acknowledging the emotional difficulty of being apart from family and friends, Robinson insisted she needed to go through this journey alone for personal growth. She also revealed the heartbreaking loss of her dog, Max, who passed away during this challenging period, stating she “really is on [her] own.”

Proud of Her Journey

Despite the hardships, Robinson expressed no regrets about her choices. “I would have an apartment if I could,” she clarified, but quickly added that she’s “absolutely” glad she took this path. “I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished out here.”

She concluded her video with a powerful message encouraging others: “Be spontaneous. Do the scary. F— fear.”

A Celebrated Career

Dawn Robinson gained fame as a founding member of En Vogue, alongside Cindy Herron, Terry Ellis, and Maxine Jones. The group, formed in 1989, quickly rose to prominence with hits from their debut album, “Born to Sing,” in 1990. Robinson notably provided lead vocals on popular tracks like “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It),” “Giving Him Something He Can Feel,” and “Free Your Mind.”

Throughout their successful run, En Vogue earned six Grammy nominations between 1991 and 1997. Robinson eventually left the group in March 1997 to sign with Dr. Dre’s label, Aftermath Entertainment. She later reunited with En Vogue briefly in 2005 and 2009 and also pursued acting, including an appearance on the first season of the reality show “R&B Divas: Los Angeles.
