Wendy Williams Passes Competency Test, Fights Conservatorship

Wendy Williams mental competency test results

Wendy Williams, the former talk show host, has spoken out about her ongoing legal battle over her conservatorship. The 60-year-old media personality called into Good Day New York on Tuesday, March 11, from the hospital, where she was taken the previous day after authorities conducted a welfare check at her assisted living facility.

Mental Competency Tests and Dementia Diagnosis

During her live call-in, Williams addressed concerns about her health and mental well-being, revealing that she underwent mental competency evaluations following her 2023 dementia diagnosis. Despite her diagnosis, Williams strongly asserted that she is mentally fit.

“I passed with flying colors!” she claimed, adding that she does not believe she should remain under legal guardianship.

Her caretaker, Ginalia Monterrosa, supported this claim, stating that Williams has been medically deemed not incapacitated.

“She had those tests, she’s been deemed she is not incapacitated,” Monterrosa told anchor Rosanna Scotto. “I think it’s great news, and it’s public, and everybody knows factually that Wendy’s not incapacitated.”

Fight Against Conservatorship

Williams has been under a legal conservatorship since 2022, meaning that a court-appointed guardian manages her personal and financial affairs. She expressed her determination to regain control over her life and career.

“In terms of getting out of guardianship, that is my number one, A, number one most important thing,” Williams stated.

She also shared her hopes for the future, saying she wants to stay in New York and return to work.

Welfare Check and Hospital Visit

The latest controversy surrounding Williams began on March 10, when NYPD officers responded to a welfare check at her assisted living facility. Monterrosa later revealed that she had contacted Adult Protective Services to report concerns of possible elder abuse and called the police to check on Williams.

Following the welfare check, emergency responders escorted Williams to a local hospital for evaluation. She later explained on The Breakfast Club that she willingly went to the hospital to speak with an independent doctor.

“The police showed up. I’m exhausted. You know what I’m saying? I wanted to go to the hospital to talk to the doctor,” she said.

Life Under Guardianship: ‘Like a Prison’

Williams has been open about her struggles while living under legal guardianship, describing her living situation as restrictive. She currently resides in a memory care unit within her assisted living facility.

“I’m on the fifth floor. It’s called the memory unit. This is a floor where you [go if you] don’t remember anything,” she said. “Like, really?”

She also shared details about her limited freedom.

“As far as me being able to go outside, I’m not allowed. I have to stay in this building,” she revealed. “In order to go to the gym, which is on the third floor, I have to be permitted, and then I have somebody who works in this building walk me downstairs.”

Williams described her frustration with her financial situation, saying, “My money is in the air. This is my life!”

Response to Concerns About Alcohol and Finances

Given Williams’ past struggles with alcoholism, Scotto asked whether she would be open to having a sober companion and financial advisor if she were freed from her conservatorship.

“I don’t need that. I’m not drinking ever in my life,” Williams claimed.

Regarding her finances, she clarified that she has long had financial advisors.

“By the way, a financial advisor, I’ve had that for years. Of course, [I will get] a financial advisor, of course somebody to look over my money,” she said. “The money I have right now is all with my guardian person.”

Looking Ahead

Williams remains firm in her stance that she is capable of managing her life independently and is actively working toward ending her conservatorship.

With her recent competency evaluations reportedly in her favor, the former talk show star continues to fight for her freedom, hoping to regain control over her finances and future endeavors.

“I have options,” she confidently stated when discussing her next steps.

For now, Williams remains under guardianship, but her latest public statements signal that she is not backing down from her legal battle.
