Social Security Chief Resigns Amid Musk’s DOGE Data Row: Report

Social Security Chief Resigns DOGE Data Row

Michelle King, the acting commissioner of the Social Security Administration (SSA), has resigned after more than 30 years of service.

Her departure comes in the wake of growing tensions between the agency and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which reportedly sought access to sensitive personal data of American citizens.

According to sources cited by The Associated Press, King decided to step down after refusing to provide the requested information to DOGE staffers. This marks the latest in a series of disputes surrounding Musk’s efficiency team as they attempt to obtain access to federal data.

New Leadership at SSA

Following King’s resignation, the White House swiftly appointed Leland Dudek as the new acting commissioner of the SSA. Dudek, a career official within the agency, will temporarily lead until a permanent replacement is confirmed.

In a statement on Monday, White House spokesperson Harrison Fields announced that President Trump has nominated Frank Bisignano to take over the role permanently. We expect him to be swiftly confirmed in the coming weeks,” Fields stated. He also emphasized Trump’s commitment to appointing individuals who “work on behalf of the American people” rather than catering to what he called a failing bureaucracy.

DOGE’s Expanding Data Requests Raise Alarms

The controversy surrounding Musk’s DOGE does not stop with the SSA. Reports indicate that the team has also sought access to taxpayer data stored within the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). If granted, this would provide DOGE with entry to the IRS’ Integrated Data Retrieval System, a database containing detailed financial records, bank information, and other personal details of American citizens.

This development has raised concerns among experts and advocacy groups who fear that such access could compromise citizens’ financial security and privacy.

Concerns Over Potential Misuse of Data

Nancy Altman, president of Social Security Works, an organization advocating for the protection of Social Security benefits, described the situation as a “serious breach.”

“The SSA holds data on every American with a Social Security number. This includes retirees, disabled individuals, and low-income citizens who receive Supplemental Security Income,” Altman stated. She warned that if misused, this information could be weaponized to alter or erase earnings records, preventing individuals from collecting the benefits they have earned.

Social Security’s Political Significance

The debate over Social Security has intensified in recent months, making it one of the most pressing political topics in the U.S. As of now, around 72.5 million Americans rely on Social Security benefits. The program accounts for approximately $1.5 trillion in federal spending annually.

An audit cited by The New York Times revealed that between 2015 and 2022, the SSA paid out $8.6 trillion in benefits, with improper payments accounting for less than 1% of the total. However, concerns over the system’s integrity and data security continue to drive political debates.

Michelle King’s Legacy

Michelle King took on the role of acting commissioner in January 2025. Having joined the SSA in 1994 as a bilingual claims representative, she gradually rose through the ranks, holding key positions such as chief financial officer and deputy commissioner for operations. Her decades-long career in public service is now overshadowed by the controversy surrounding her resignation.

As the White House pushes for new leadership at the SSA, concerns remain over the extent of DOGE’s influence and its continued attempts to access sensitive government data. The coming weeks will likely determine the future of data security within federal agencies and how the government navigates this complex issue.
