Dixville Notch Splits Vote 3-3 in First Results of 2024 US Election

First US Election Result Dixville Notch Tie

In the early hours of election day, Dixville Notch, a small township in New Hampshire, cast the first ballots in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, delivering an evenly split result.

This tiny community, home to just six residents, declared three votes each for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican candidate Donald Trump, marking a rare tie in its storied history.

Midnight Voting Tradition

Dixville Notch has maintained a unique tradition since 1960: casting its votes precisely at midnight on election day. Located in a remote part of New Hampshire, the town opened its polling station promptly at 12:00 AM (05:00 GMT) and completed its count within minutes, giving the nation its first glimpse of the election results. This long-standing practice draws media attention from around the country, with journalists gathering to witness the historic moment. As the votes were cast, the U.S. national anthem played on an accordion added a touch of Americana to the midnight event.

Voter Insights Reflect Political Divisions

Les Otten, a registered Republican and longtime resident, made headlines with his decision to vote for Kamala Harris, marking the first time he crossed party lines in a presidential election. In an interview with the media, Otten explained his vote, emphasizing his belief in Harris’s commitment to serve the people.

He contrasted this with his perception of Donald Trump’s approach, saying, “If the person that is elected believes that all of us have input and can form the government… that’s very different than if they’re saying to us, ‘We need to follow what I say.’” Otten’s sentiments resonated with the town’s evenly split outcome, reflecting a mix of political loyalties in the close-knit community.

Another resident commented on the broader political atmosphere in New Hampshire, describing it as a “purple state” where both Republican and Democratic support runs deep, leading to a politically divided landscape.

Mixed Results Across Local Races

While the presidential vote ended in a tie, local results showed distinct preferences. Dixville Notch’s residents voted five to one in favor of a Republican candidate for governor but opted four to two for a Democratic congresswoman. This diversity in voting patterns underlines the community’s complex political identity, often reflective of New Hampshire’s own swing-state status.

A Storied History of Voting First

Dixville Notch has long held a symbolic place in U.S. election history. In 2020, all six residents cast their ballots for Joe Biden, making him only the second presidential candidate to receive unanimous support from the town since 1960. This year, the town’s Republican primary choice was also notable, as the residents unanimously supported Nikki Haley as their preferred candidate for the GOP presidential nomination.

A Snapshot of American Democracy

Dixville Notch’s first in-the-nation vote continues to capture the country, symbolizing the spirit of democratic participation. The 3-3 tie in the 2024 election serves as a reminder of the deeply held convictions and diverse opinions across the U.S., even within a community as small as Dixville Notch. As the rest of the country heads to the polls, this tiny town’s results add an intriguing layer to the unfolding story of the presidential race.
