On Friday, a powerful and historic tornado outbreak swept through eastern Nebraska, leaving a trail of destruction in the Omaha metropolitan area.
Despite the severity of the storms, state emergency management officials have confirmed that there were no serious injuries or fatalities reported as of late Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Valley, Nebraska, the tornado outbreak was unprecedented, with a record-breaking 41 tornado warnings issued throughout the day, surpassing the previous record of 33 set on May 12, 2023.
Meteorologists noted that the tornadoes that hit Douglas County may have reached potentially record-breaking force, but further on-the-ground verification is needed to determine if any reached the strength of an EF-3 tornado or higher.
The affected areas, including Elkhorn, Bennington, and Waterloo, saw dozens of damaged homes and other structures. In Lancaster County, the town of Waverly experienced significant damage, with at least 12 homes damaged and minor injuries reported.
A tornado also caused a 31-car train to derrail, and three workers at an industrial facility suffered injuries when the entire building collapsed.
Authorities urged residents to stay away from the damaged areas to allow first responders to work safely. Douglas County Sheriff Aaron Hanson warned that the affected areas remained dangerous, with the potential for hazardous objects or infrastructure that could pose a threat to anyone entering.
In Omaha, the Eppley Airfield reported significant damage to the private plane air service side, but the commercial terminal remained operational.
The Omaha Public Power District also reported extensive damage to six transmission lines and power poles, leaving around 7,000 customers without electricity as of late Friday. Local hospitals, however, remained open and accepting patients.
The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported receiving reports of building and house damage in several other counties, including Sherman, Greeley, Boone, Buffalo, Butler, Howard, Platte, and Nance. Washington County was still assessing the extent of the damage as of late Friday.
Governor Jim Pillen announced that he had “ordered that state resources be made available to assist with the emergency response and to support local first responders.” He also acknowledged the resilience of Nebraskans, stating that “Nebraskans are tough, resilient people, and our neighbours and communities will rally around affected families and businesses to assist them.”
Meteorologists have warned that a second round of severe weather, including the potential for more tornadoes and hail, could hit the area on Saturday, emphasizing the importance of heeding warning systems that saved lives on Friday.
The lack of serious injuries or fatalities is a testament to the preparedness and response efforts of local authorities and emergency services.
However, the scale of the damage serves as a stark reminder of the power and unpredictability of severe weather events and the ongoing need for vigilance and preparedness in communities across the region.
