New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art was transformed into an enchanting garden spectacle on the first Monday of May for the 2024 Met Gala. Fashion’s biggest night returned in full glamorous force, drawing the world’s most celebrated stars across music, film, art, and culture.
This year’s long-awaited theme was “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” taking inspiration not from the classic fairy tale but rather from the Costume Institute’s sprawling new spring 2024 exhibition.
Inside the iconic museum’s hallowed halls, over 250 priceless pieces from the permanent collection dating back to the Elizabethan era were showcased through cutting-edge technology.
Delicate, centuries-old designs that could never be worn again due to preservation were painstakingly recreated and reimagined through CGI animations, spectacular light projections, immersive soundscapes, and imaginative video displays.
The goal was to awaken these “sleeping beauties” of fashion history for modern audiences to experience their grandeur in new, transformative ways.
To complement this innovative exhibition concept, the exclusive Met Gala followed a whimsical dress code dubbed “The Garden of Time.” A nod to J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story about a Count, Countess, and their dwindling crystalline garden under siege, attendees arrived in breathtaking ensembles that paid tribute to nature’s splendor.
From delicate floral prints and patterns to literally wearing bouquets of blooms, the celebrity looks ran the gorgeous gamut of botanical inspiration. Colours, fabrics, and embellishments evoked blossoming gardens, tangled vines, dewy petals, and more.
Leading the star-studded charge as co-chairs were four icons in their own right – actress Zendaya, actor Chris Hemsworth, music superstar Jennifer Lopez, and genre-blending rapper/singer Bad Bunny.
Vogue’s broadcast team capturing all the arrivals included La La Anthony, Gwendoline Christie, Ashley Graham, and social media sensation Emma Chamberlain as special correspondent.
Among the many showstopping looks:
– Zendaya made two grand entrances, first in a custom Maison Margiela outfit based on a John Galliano design, then reemerging hours later in a vintage 1996 Galliano for Givenchy gown with an elaborate floral headpiece.
– Lopez could barely walk in her ultra-intricate Schiaparelli gown featuring over 2.5 million hand-embroidered silver beads and bugles. As a co-chair, she arrived fashionably late.
– Doja Cat hit the carpet, soaking wet, stripping down to a white silky shirt saturated to evoke morning dew on flowers.
– Lana Del Rey stunned in an Alexander McQueen corseted dress, completed by a headpiece adorned with natural hawthorn branches.
– K-pop stars Jessica and Krystal made their Met Gala debut in complementary looks – Jessica in an elegant white tassel gown and Krystal in an avant-garde sculptural piece that hugged her curves.
– Cardi B commanded the spotlight in a dramatic black Windowsen gown so enormous, nine men were required to carry the voluminous fabric up the iconic stairs.
While the livestream wrapped at 8:30 pm ET, the fashionable festivities carried on late into the night inside the museum.
As co-chairs, hosts, A-list entertainers, and fashion mavens ascended the iconic Met steps, the 2024 gala reawakened the electric excitement around one of culture’s most deeply-rooted traditions and sources of creative inspiration.
Through an extraordinary blend of historic education and cutting-edge design, this year’s event put fashion in resplendent dialogue with nature, technology, and human ingenuity.
The 2024 Met Gala was a true “sleeping beauty” in its own right – a dazzling night that will go down in history as one of fashion’s most innovative and thought-provoking celebrations.
