Global pop sensation Taylor Swift is currently in the midst of a six-show run at Singapore’s National Stadium, part of her record-breaking “Eras” world tour. During her opening show on Saturday, Swift took time to explain to fans the deep personal significance of performing in the country where her mother, Andrea Swift, spent much of her childhood.
“My mom actually spent a lot of her childhood with her mom, dad and sister growing up in Singapore,” Swift shared in a fan-captured video posted on social media after the show. “So a lot of the time when we’d come here on tour, my mom would take me and drive me past her old house, where she used to go to school.”
Swift went on to describe how the city brings back nostalgic memories for her mother. “To get to come here and play a show this big with so many beautiful, generous people who are essentially honoring my family with what you just did with that song, it means the world,” she raved to the energetic crowd.
In a 2016 interview, Swift had previously discussed her mother’s early years in Singapore and how meaningful it was for Andrea to revisit places from her childhood while accompanying her daughter on tour. Both of Swift’s parents, including her father Scott, have been stalwart supporters of her record-shattering career.
During a May 2023 show in Philadelphia, Swift paid tribute to her mom on Mother’s Day by performing her 2008 song “The Best Day,” which she wrote about compiling memories of their close relationship. “It was the sweetest thing ever because I just think she couldn’t have comprehended that I would write a song about the two of us,” Swift recalled of her mom’s stunned reaction to the song.
With four shows remaining in Singapore, Swift’s mini-residency promises more emotional moments as she celebrates her family history in the city. The global superstar’s Singapore run provides a poignant coda for her spectacular “Eras” tour, which has broken multiple records worldwide since kicking off in March 2023. As Swift reflects on her monumental career before perhaps stepping back from touring, these Singapore shows clearly hold special meaning both professionally and personally.
