Every year, we celebrate Parshuram Jayanti on the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakh. This year, it falls on May 10, 2024. But have you ever wondered how Parashuram Ji got his name, and why his weapon is so well-known? There’s a really interesting story behind it all.
Parashuram Ji: The Sixth Incarnation of Lord Vishnu
According to Hindu religious texts, Lord Parashuram is the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He was born in the first prahar on the night of Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakh. In Satyayuga, Lord Vishnu took on this form to destroy the sinners on earth.
Interestingly, Lord Ram, another incarnation of Lord Vishnu, was born in Treta Yuga. During Sita Swayamvar, Parashuram ji and Lord Ram actually met face-to-face!

The Story Behind the Name Parashuram
So, how did Parashuram Ji get his name? Well, according to the scriptures, when Lord Vishnu was born into a Brahmin family in Satyayuga, he was named Ram. He was a great devotee of Lord Shiva, and pleased with his worship, Lord Shiva gave him a weapon called Parashu. And that’s how Ram became known as Parashuram, with the Parashu becoming his main weapon.
Parashuram ji has the blessing of being immortal, which means he was present along with other incarnations of Lord Vishnu born in every era. Lord Ram and Lord Parshuram met for the first time in Sita Swayamvar, and seeing the bow in Ram’s hand, Parashuram ji understood that Ram had been born in Treta Yuga to end sin on earth.
Parashuram’s Legendary Weapon
Now, let’s talk about Parashuram Ji’s famous weapon. According to the scriptures, Parashuram Ji was born into a Brahmin family and received his education from Dada Richik. He got training in using weapons from his father, Jamadagni, taught him how to use weapons.
Parshuram ji, a Brahmin, had complete knowledge of religion, the Vedas, and the Puranas. He was also proficient in policy and had no competition in terms of knowledge of weapons. Lord Shiva bestows a weapon known as Farsa on Parashuram Ji, empowering him to eradicate unrighteousness. Parashuram ji is believed to have killed 36 Haihayavanshi Kshatriya kings with this weapon!
