Disney has unveiled the first trailer for its upcoming Lion King prequel film “Mufasa: The Lion King,” offering a glimpse into the backstory of the beloved king from the original animated classic.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Barry Jenkins (Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk), the music-driven movie serves as both an origin tale exploring Mufasa’s rise to power and a narrative follow-up to Jon Favreau’s 2019 blockbuster CGI remake.
The teaser trailer sets the stage with the wise mandrill shaman Rafiki, voiced by South African actor John Kani, narrating Mufasa’s legendary journey to a young lion cub named Kiara – the daughter of Simba and Nala from the previous films.
Comic relief duo Timon and Pumbaa, reprising their roles voiced by Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen, also make an appearance, promising their “signature schtick.”
In a significant bit of generational star power, music icon Beyoncé Knowles-Carter will return as the voice of Nala after portraying the character in Favreau’s 2019 box office smash.
Her 11-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, is also making her acting debut, voicing the role of Kiara.
The official logline reveals the film’s central narrative will unfold through a series of flashbacks:
“Mufasa: The Lion King enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young Kiara, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their schtick. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub who meets a sympathetic lion named Taka — the heir to a royal bloodline. Their chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey with an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny, their bonds tested as they evade a threatening and deadly foe.”
British actor Aaron Pierre voices the titular role of Mufasa (originally voiced by James Earl Jones), while Kelvin Harrison Jr. takes on the part of Taka – who grows up to become the villainous Scar.
Though credited as Taka initially, the character is described as a prince who accepts the orphaned Mufasa as a brother before their friendship is strained.
The stacked ensemble voice cast also features:
- Donald Glover is returning as Simba
- Tiffany Boone as Sarabi
- Thandiwe Newton as Taka’s mother Eshe
- Lennie James as Taka’s father Obasi
- Anika Noni Rose as Mufasa’s mother Afia
- Keith David as Mufasa’s father Masego
- Mads Mikkelsen as a formidable lion Kiros
Plus, Kagiso Lediga, Preston Nyman, and actors voicing additional characters
The film reunites the iconic musical team from The Lion King, with Hans Zimmer’s soaring scores and reprising classics from the likes of Elton John and Tim Rice.
But it also expands the Pride Lands’ musical legacy with new songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is producing alongside Jenkins.
“The Lion King has an incredible musical legacy from some of the greatest songwriters around, and I’m humbled and proud to be part of it,” said Miranda. “Working with Barry to bring Mufasa’s story to life has been a joy.”
Jenkins previewed footage at CinemaCon in Las Vegas earlier this month, teasing an “expansive adventure” blending comedy and dramatic gravitas while reintroducing familiar characters from a new perspective.
“Audiences can expect an epic story, comedy with plenty of familiar faces, absolutely hilarious moments, and some with extreme gravitas,” the director promised theater owners.
Mufasa: The Lion King continues Disney’s strategy of revisiting its beloved animated classics through live-action/CGI remakes and derivative spinoff projects aimed at nostalgia-driven audiences.
The 2019 “live-action” reimagining of The Lion King was a massive commercial hit, grossing $1.7 billion globally to become the highest-grossing film ever released under the Disney banner at that point.
With an acclaimed director’s artistic vision, an A-list music team, and the added marquee value of the Carters, Mufasa has a shot at roaring success by expanding the Lion King’s iconic lore in new directions.
